Overview

The St. Louis County Government Department of Public Health is looking for a Forensic Investigator to join their team. The Office of the Medical Examiner is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected, suspicious, unnatural or violent death or deaths that represent a threat to public health. Investigators will evaluate and investigate reportable deaths according to defined policies and procedures to meet state and local laws.
Responsibilities

Assess death reports to determine the extent of investigation required to close any given case.
Perform scene investigations and determine associated facts related to death to assist in determination of cause and manner of death.
Establish scientific positive identification of decedent, communicate with family members to notify them of decedent’s death and determine disposition of remains.
Share investigative, forensic and medical information with involved agencies.
Qualifications

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience.
Possession of an AMBDI (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators) Certification within two years of employment.
A current, valid driver’s license is also required.
Work Schedule

The work schedule consists of rotating three-month shifts to support 24/7 operations. The position works 10-hour shifts 4 days per week, which may include weekends and holidays. Shift hours are 8:00 am – 6:00 pm for the daytime rotation and 10:00 pm – 8:00 am for the overnight rotation. Hours and days may vary based on the needs of the office. There is a 10% shift differential for overnight shifts.
Salary and Benefits

The typical starting salary range will be $55,536 - $66,643 annually depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations. Selection and Appointment

A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant, including education and experience, supplemental questions, and references. The committee may establish additional admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade. A qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview is required to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews, candidates will receive an email with instructions to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire. The five top ranking candidates will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants offered a merit position may be required to submit to urinalysis prior to appointment, with the cost covered by the County.
