Description
GCI's Staff Network Engineer will apply engineering principles to multiple sub-groups within the Technology Solutions internal departments; responsible for architectural design, development, implementation, and support within the company and/or between business departments that follow telecommunication industry standards using engineering principles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities at All Levels
Ensures the integrity of high availability network infrastructure to provide maximum performance in design, implementation, and support.
Able to understand GCI standard engineering concepts of availability, efficiency, redundancy, scalability, and security.
Able to identify opportunities for continuous improvement of the current network and/or systems facilities.
Maximizes performance using network monitoring tools, troubleshooting network and/or system outages, scheduling updates, and collaborating with architects on optimization.
Maintains professional skillset by participating in educational opportunities, technical organizations, reading professional publications, and personal use of technology.
Provides detailed reports on network operational status, and milestones related to project completion.
Capable of remote site support for off‑site personnel and customers.
Coordinates with project management and engineering teams on a regular basis, supports and manages escalation events, develops and updates documentation and support materials, and mentors junior engineers and technicians.

Performs highly complex or unique special work assignments and requires the ability to coordinate complex technical issues. Capable of performing the role of Lead Project Engineer for major and complex company initiatives, crossing departmental boundaries or for projects involving multiple disciplines and requiring advanced technical leadership.

This is a leadership role which is expected to perform at high levels throughout the company, interacting with other directors, senior directors, and vice presidents; works with great autonomy, is an expert in their given field of discipline; has profit and loss responsibility and is accountable; works with department management in developing departmental short and long‑range objectives, plans, budget, and policies. Leads by example ensuring team members take full advantage of advances in the technologies used by the company to improve and add new services for customers. Provides technical leadership, oversight, and mentors junior engineers.
Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and is capable of performing the role of Lead Engineer for major and highly complex company initiatives, crossing departmental boundaries for projects involving multiple disciplines and requiring advanced technical leadership.
Directs technical groups in conceptual development of network systems to support business line services and goals. Determines growth and technology direction of network operating systems to improve performance of and enhance business line services and corporate goals.
Develops performance measurement subsystems for reporting network systems performance and advanced monitoring and review of Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Develops and maintains detailed 1–2‑year capital and 5‑year forward‑looking plans consistent with the 5‑year technology roadmap. Leads and participates in the development of inter and intra team processes for system performance. Serves as KPI subject matter, monitoring statistical network performance data.
Serves as an integral resource to lead the integration of the company’s customers and employees alike. Works with operational teams to troubleshoot problems. Responsible for leading and providing guidance to a team in technical discussions with vendors for resolution issues.
Minimum Qualifications
Required: A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year‑for‑year basis.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Technologies, Electrical Engineering, or relevant field.
Minimum of twelve (12) years’ experience in progressive engineering in information technology, design and implementation using engineering principles, complex project management within telecommunications including technology insertion, or related background.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters and PhD degrees in Engineering.
Broad experience within the telecommunications industry.
Other telecom industry or job specific certifications.
Driving Requirements
This position may require access to reliable transportation for occasional travel, such as between retail store locations, offices, worksites, or other locations as needed.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage.
Ability to work shifts as assigned, in a standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.
Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
