Nursing Instructor

College of the Canyons is seeking a faculty leader in the area of Nursing. This is a 10-MONTH professional, full-time tenure track position beginning August 14, 2026. The position may include a combination of teaching, department, college, and community leadership functions. Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend duties at all District sites.

Example of Duties

Teaches a full load of courses in Nursing, including Non-Credit Nursing Skills Lab Courses, lecture, and/or clinical courses based on departmental needs.

Provides instructional and remedial instructional support in the nursing lab for students to improve competencies and skills in meeting course objectives by utilizing a working knowledge of curriculum development and student assessment.

Conducts practicums to evaluate students’ ability to perform nursing skills in the hospital and on real patients safely.

Develops and revises appropriate credit and noncredit program and course curriculum in response to discipline and workforce needs.

Manages the Nursing Skills Lab, including but not limited to scheduling development, ordering supplies, and equipment maintenance.

Serves as the primary provider of instructional support in the nursing skills laboratory, ensuring consistent student access to practice, remediation, and competency development outside of scheduled class time.

Maintains and coordinates open lab hours during times when students are not in class, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends based on program needs.

Ensures the lab is open and staffed during high demand periods and adjunct availability as needed to support student success and progression.

Works up to 35 hours per week over a 16-week semester, with hours distributed to maximize student access and support. Weekly hours may vary based on student demand, course schedules and key program milestones.

Collaborates with faculty to identify at risk students and provides targeted lab support to improve student outcomes.

Provides individualized and small-group instruction, including skills remediation, dosage calculation support, and preparation for clinical performance.

Orients and manages nursing skills lab staff such as simulation technicians and lab assistants.

Facilitates low and high-fidelity simulations.

Develops self-learning modules and workshops.

Participates in department activities including curriculum development and evaluation.

Participates in annual reports and accreditation activities.

Maintains office hours and participates in department, division, and college committees and governance.

Participates in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating departmental and college program reviews.

Participates in additional faculty responsibilities, including college decision–making activities related to professional and academic matters.

Engages in ongoing professional development and preparation related to best practices associated with pedagogy, andragogy, and instructional modalities to address anticipated student and instructional delivery needs.

Participates in and implements departmental and college program reviews.

Participates in all course, program and institutional SLO assessment processes.

Participates in faculty orientation and periodic evaluations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
Possession of an unexpired California Community College Instructor Credential in Nursing.

OR

Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing AND Master’s degree in health education or health science.

Must also meet California Board of Registered Nursing qualifications for nursing faculty listed below:

Hold an active California Registered Nurse (RN) license.

California Board of Registered Nursing Faculty Approval as an Instructor (I) – must be obtained prior to start date.

Demonstrate clinical competence in nursing through one (1) year of recent direct patient care OR one (1) academic year of clinical teaching experience providing direct patient care in a clinical facility within the last five years.

Completion of at least one (1) year of experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post‑baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities

Clinical nursing practice in medical‑surgical nursing in acute care and gerontology within the last five years.

Recent skills lab coordinator/simulation experience is desirable.

Additional experience in another specialty such as psychiatric, pediatric, and/or maternal nursing or willingness to remediate in another specialty.

Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technology required in the discipline.

Experience with online teaching and pedagogy is desired.

Strong commitment to professional growth and development and to the continued innovation and improvement of teaching.

Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology utilized in providing high‑quality instruction and the successful use of learning technology.

Willingness to facilitate and encourage student success by working to develop varied and innovative academic learning environments.

Ability and willingness to teach a wide range of classes as schedules and institutional commitments require.

Ability to communicate professionally and clearly with students and staff, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on‑campus groups and off‑campus community and education partners.

Desirable that faculty have additional abilities and interests in contributing to other professional pursuits at the College, such as instructional innovation, second language ability, sponsoring clubs, new program development, student success initiatives and community outreach.

Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socio‑economic, cultural, ethnic and disability backgrounds of community college students.

Physical Characteristics
Position will require extended periods presenting material in a classroom setting, frequent movement from one area to another, traveling to different floors of a building, use of a computer and related equipment; frequent exertion of 25‑50 pounds of force to move objects; manual dexterity and fine motor skills to demonstrate clinical procedures and handle lab instruments; adequate visual acuity to observe student performance, read labels, and monitor equipment. In the event of an emergency, employees may be relied upon to serve as emergency workers.
