The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – Microbiology performs laboratory tests on patient specimens and provides information for the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases. Maintains records of performance and uses independent judgment to generate acceptable test results within quality control standards. May participate in research and development activities and may act as a key resource for staff inside and outside the department. Instructs students, laboratory and non-laboratory staff on laboratory procedures and techniques. Performs all tasks according to standard operating procedures. May work on development and modification of procedures and assumes additional responsibilities as outlined by management or the laboratory director.

Responsibilities
The MLS performs laboratory tests on patient specimens and provides information used for diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases. Maintains performance records and uses independent judgment to generate results within quality controls. May participate in research and development activities. May serve as a resource for staff and may instruct students, laboratory and non-laboratory personnel on procedures and techniques. Adheres to standard operating procedures and may contribute to the development or modification of procedures. Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by management or the laboratory director.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related sciences.

Requires one (1) year of relevant experience.

Requires certification or eligibility for certification by ASCP, AMT, NCA, or equivalent; certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

Failure to achieve certification may result in downgrade to MT-1 position or loss of employment, depending on business need.

Knowledge of various complex and lengthy laboratory techniques and procedures.

Knowledge of specialized testing equipment and routine maintenance procedures.

Ability to maintain quality control and other records; ability to use computer to enter and retrieve test results.

Analytical skills to make quantitative and qualitative observations; ability to work independently with interruptions and concurrent tasks.

Knowledge of all laboratory safety regulations and protocols.
