
Phlebotomist

Job Overview
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, the individual collects specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood and urine, and performs a nasal swab if needed during overnight shifts.
Conducts overnight rounds and early morning draws, explains safety protocols and procedures to patients, focuses on customer service, and provides certain clerical functions.
Responsibilities
Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification card.
Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
Select appropriate specimen collection equipment.
Select an appropriate site for blood collection.
Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture.
Collect specimen according to the order of draw.
Ensure adequate mixing of specimen in tube by inversion or mechanical device.
Label in presence of patient.
Package and transport specimens.
Monitor patient and ensure bleeding has stopped, and the patient is stable.
Review prior to collection a standard checklist which includes checking for potential adverse reactions such as history of fainting, and latex allergy.
Be customer-focused and put the needs of patients first.
Maintain patient privacy and follow all HIPAA guidelines.
With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide EKG, clerical, and specimen transport functions.
With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations serviced by Laboratory Support Services.
Provide reception and associated clerical functions at the Specimen Collection center front desk, including fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones, and placing requisitions in the queue according to policies and procedures.
Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other required training.
Work in collaboration with and practice good teamwork and communication skills with co‑workers.
Shift: Phlebotomy, weekend shift, Saturday and Sunday morning, 7:00 am‑3:30 pm.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Pediatric phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Inpatient phlebotomy experience preferred, and training will also be provided.
Graduate of a training program that includes phlebotomy skills, with demonstrated and acceptable competency in phlebotomy preferred.
