
Echo Sonographer, Part-time

Job Description
The echocardiographic lab at ZSFG is a friendly and collegial place to work. We believe in teamwork, providing excellent service, and supporting the overall mission of UCSF and SFDPH in delivering exceptional patient care while promoting education and research. This position is primarily clinical, performing transthoracic studies in the echo lab as well as portable studies in patient units or procedural areas, and exercise or pharmacologic stress tests. Participation in research, quality improvement, and education of students and residents/fellows is also expected and enriches this position. The position is a 50% FTE appointment at SFGH with a variable schedule of approximately 2.5 days per week.
Responsibilities
Cardiac Ultrasound Studies
Perform ultrasound studies of the heart including 2D/3D, M-mode, Doppler, and color interrogation in a combined inpatient/outpatient setting.
Conduct portable/bedside studies in ICU, patient care units, emergency department, cath lab, or operating rooms as required.
Average number of studies per day per sonographer is 6, but can vary.
Use IV injection of agitated saline or echo contrast in appropriately selected patients.
Collect accurate images and measurements, process echocardiograms, including data entry, editing, record keeping, and data management.
Interpret studies and create preliminary reports.
Maintain quality, consistency, hygiene, and follow laboratory and hospital protocols.
Participate in hazardous waste management: proper disposal of waste materials, disinfecting and cleaning probes (TTE and TEE), and filing necessary forms.
Stress Testing
Perform exercise and pharmacologic stress echocardiography with or without contrast.
Assist with treadmill stress testing and recording of 12-lead ECGs when the lab is short‑staffed.
Patient Care
Interact with a broad spectrum of patients, demonstrating compassion, respect, patience, and cultural sensitivity during exam preparation and performance.
Explain the purpose and procedure of each test to the patient.
Attend to patients after the exam and provide follow‑up information.
Serve as a liaison with patient units and other departments to ensure adequate and timely patient transport.
Respond to emergency situations and triage appropriately according to urgency.
Communication and Team Work
Foster a collegial culture and support team collaboration, offering to share clinical work and other tasks.
Participate in daily team huddles and respond promptly and courteously to referring providers, office personnel, and other stakeholders.
Advise on the type of study that will achieve appropriate results based on patient indicators.
Provide High Quality Service
Deliver high quality and timely service to patients, providers, and the organization.
Research and Quality Improvement
Foster a culture that values education, research, and quality improvement.
Participate in ongoing QI projects, protocol development, and personnel training.
Support research studies within and outside the division, perform research echo studies, maintain data integrity, and follow research protocols.
Teaching and Supervision
Provide orientation, supervision, and hands‑on teaching to fellows, residents, and sonography students on equipment use and technical performance of cardiac ultrasounds.
Administrative
Perform scheduling, supply restocking, equipment and space cleaning/maintenance, and other administrative tasks related to echocardiography as needed.
Maintain required professional licensing, training, and credentials.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
2 years of working and scanning experience in an echocardiography lab after graduation.
Two (2) years of college, preferably with courses in physiology, psychology and electronics, and one year of diagnostic ultrasound technology experience, including successful completion of an ultrasound technology traineeship; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Graduation from an accredited Cardiac Sonography program.
Experience with stress echocardiography.
Successful completion of the ARDMS and/or CCI examination or equivalent training certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with both GE and Philips equipment.
Fluency in a second language.
Previous work in research, teaching/mentoring, or quality improvement projects.
