
RaHP VEC summer intern

Position Summary
The Rockies and High Plains Vector‑borne Diseases Center (RaHP VEC) summer internship seeks to facilitate opportunities for field training and localized research projects for students from throughout our region (CO, WY, NM, UT, and the TX panhandle) who are interested in vector control and public health. The projects aim to fit within the RaHP VEC mission of expanding training and capacity, and implementing consistent and useful evaluation metrics and other practices within our region. Specific duties and job responsibilities vary by individual internship but generally incorporate various elements of vector surveillance and control work, as well as potentially public health/outreach oriented tasks.

Required Job Qualifications
High school diploma
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program; or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program (
Preferred Job Qualifications
Experience/interest in ecological field research
Interest in public health and/or vector‑borne diseases
Exceptional attention to detail and organization
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience working autonomously
Experience driving long distances in rural areas
Access to a reliable vehicle, preferably with 4‑wheel drive or high‑clearance
Essential Duties
Drive to local field sites
Set/collect mosquito traps
Other activities associated with aerial spray control
Analyze data and generate figures and tables
Process mosquitoes from field traps, including sorting, counting, species determination.
Perform molecular assays as applicable (species determination, pathogen testing, etc.)
Aid/Perform insecticide resistance testing as applicable (CDC bottle bioassay, etc.)
Coordinate with partners and community members to expand the state’s reporting system
Create education materials (handouts, social media posts, etc.) for the public relating to vector‑borne diseases
Communicate results to collaborators through regular virtual meetings and written reports
Salary Range
$20.00 per hour
