PRIMARY FUNCTION
An Asphalt Distributor Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the work flow dictates. An Asphalt Distributor Operator consists of operating an asphalt distributor by applying specialized emulsions to roadways, which are then covered by a chip spreader. The operator is responsible for setting the pace for the paving operation. This position will report directly to the Paving Foreman.
This is a union position - Successful candidate may become part of the local 14581 Steelworkers Union (if not already a member) if they so choose
CDL REQUIRED
Class A or Class B CDL required!
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Drives and operates distributor truck equipped with tank to spray asphalt emulsions on road surfaces
Connects hose from storage tank to truck tank and moves lever to fill pressure tank with asphalt liquid
Regulate burner to heat liquid and start auxiliary pump
Snap or screw on spray bars to attain required width of spray
Turn valve to regulate flow of material at specified rate and adjust levers to adjust height of spray bar from road surface
Monitor flow gages, tachometer and temperature gauge to insure uniform distribution
Perform daily safety checks of fluid levels on oil, water, fuel and inspections for leaks and damage to machine before operation
Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order
Responsible for notifying supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired
Understand and execute different emulsions. Shifts may vary according to project
Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task;
Properly follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment;
Report any problems to your manager;
Properly follow all company policies and OSHA / MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment;
Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently;
Ability to follow verbal and written instruction.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Excellent interpersonal skills;
Perform any other general duties as specified
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; one to two years related asphalt and road construction experience;
Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B with N-tanker & X-hazmat endorsement
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS CONTINUED
Thorough understanding of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving;
Pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check;
Pass a pre-employment "Fit for Work" physical;
Be able to provide valid documentation for the I-9 Immigration document;
Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times;
Report to work at the designated start time;
Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required. This job is for a portable paving crew requiring extensive travel;
Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary;
Be able to work overtime when required;
Maintain current driver's license that meets state requirements;
Have a Motor Vehicle Record that meets company standards;
Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold;
Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook;
Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required;
Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and / or MSHA;
Be at least age 18 years of age due to nature of working environment;
Previous related experience in construction field is preferred.
