Risk Engineering Internship
The Risk Engineering Internship offers hands‑on experience in evaluating property and casualty‑related risks, understanding loss control strategies, and supporting the delivery of high‑quality engineering services to commercial clients. Interns will work alongside experienced Risk Engineers to learn how exposures are assessed, documented, and communicated using industry codes, standards, and corporate guidelines. This role is ideal for students interested in fire protection engineering, risk management, insurance, construction, or safety sciences.
Interns will gain exposure to NFPA codes, fire protection system evaluations, risk assessment methodologies, and technical report writing, while contributing to real‑world projects involving manufacturing and large commercial properties.
Key Responsibilities
Accompany Risk Engineers in conducting on‑site assessments of large and complex commercial properties.
Help evaluate property exposures, fire protection systems, and sprinkler adequacy.
Participate in plan reviews for new construction and renovation projects.
Contribute to the preparation of technical reports summarizing findings, recommendations, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Observe communication between Risk Engineering, Underwriting, and external clients to understand how technical insights inform insurance decisions.
Help review documentation and reports prepared by field Risk Engineering staff.
Participate in training sessions and shadow Senior Risk Engineers to learn best practices.
Support the team by gathering data, preparing materials, and assisting with technical research for special analyses.
Assist in drafting or updating internal policies, procedures, and technical bulletins under the guidance of the Director of Risk Engineering.
Research emerging technologies, codes, and industry trends to support continuous improvement.
Participate in marketing or informational efforts related to Risk Engineering services.
Support work as appropriate for an intern’s level of training.
What You’ll Learn
Fundamentals of property and casualty loss control and risk engineering
Application of NFPA codes, especially those related to fire protection and sprinkler systems
How to interpret construction documents and sprinkler plans
How risk assessments influence underwriting and insurance decisions
Professional communication with internal and external stakeholders
Technical writing and documentation skills
Exposure to large‑scale commercial and industrial environments
Preferred Qualifications
Pursuing a degree in Risk Management, Business, Fire Protection Engineering, Safety Science, or a related field
Interest in fire protection systems, building codes, and risk assessment
Interest in liability, workers compensation, commercial auto casualty line risk
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Clear written and verbal communication
Ability to work collaboratively and learn in a technical environment
Program Overview/Benefits
Program Dates: June 2, 2026 – August 14, 2026
3 Day Induction: June 2 – June 4, 2026 (Location, Warren, NJ)
Hybrid Schedule: Minimum 4 days in the office per week
Compensation: Hourly rate of $25.00
