Role
Mechanic Heavy Equipment (Traveling) – maintaining and repairing critical machinery across various locations to ensure operational efficiency and safety by minimizing equipment downtime. This is a full-time position; pay is monthly based on the current union agreement. Shifts are Monday through Friday (10-hour shifts) with overtime after ten hours. Subject to alternating shifts or starting times, nights, on-call, weekends, overtime, and holidays.
Compensation Details
The monthly pay rate for a new hire Traveling Mechanic is approximately $8,726.19. Starting out, employees may earn $104,714.28 to $112,629 per year, with potential to reach $136,000+ depending on hours worked and other factors. This is an average based on hours worked, pay rates, and other factors.
Travel and Training
Extensive travel is required to job sites within the designated seniority region and states. Training is company-paid and includes on-the-job and classroom components, with travel to the BNSF Training Center.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain and repair the fleet of equipment operated by BNSF.
Disassemble, repair, modify, manufacture, overhaul, and troubleshoot roadway maintenance equipment, including hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, driveline, and final/planetary drive systems.
Operate equipment and use manual, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools, welders, and cutting torches to perform and verify maintenance and repairs.
Work in a safety-sensitive environment with diverse and extreme weather conditions; conditions may include walking on uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Relocation and Probation
Relocation assistance is not currently available. There is a 60-day probationary period.
Basic Qualifications
Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN status).
21 years of age or older
Able to work safely in the stated working conditions and hours
Able to meet travel requirements
Able to read, write, and communicate in English
Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally
Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License minimum; Class A upon requirement, with air brake endorsements or able to obtain one within the first 60 days of employment
Able to visually distinguish colors (red, blue, green, yellow, and clear light)
Ability to differentiate verbal and non-verbal sounds and comprehend verbal communication in the work environment
Two years minimum verifiable mechanical work experience or training
One year minimum verifiable training and/or experience with gasoline and diesel engines on large, industrial equipment
Three months minimum verifiable training and/or experience with electrical and/or gas welding
One year minimum verifiable training and/or experience with electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagrams and schematics
Able to use hands and hand tools for holding, grasping, turning, and pulling
Able to climb ladders, get on/off equipment, and work from heights including repairs on top of heavy equipment and trucks
Able to bend, lift, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods
