Position Summary
Reporting to the Camp Director, the Sports Specialist oversees all aspects of the Day Camp sports and games program, utilizing both indoor and outdoor spaces. The Sports & Games Specialist provides enriching, age‑appropriate instruction while ensuring the safety, enjoyment, and emotional well‑being of every camper.
Key Responsibilities
Keep safety of campers as the first priority and emphasize personal safety and emotional well‑being with campers, parents, and other camp personnel at all times.
Create and implement a sports curriculum with an appropriate amount of choice, using sports to educate and promote healthy activity.
Promote teamwork, skill and character development, sports games, and other active games.
Document sports curriculum and keep examples for following years.
Plan and implement recreational and educational programs that emphasize group participation and teamwork.
Create an active, engaging environment.
Assist with pre or post‑care and/or transportation as assigned, ensuring a name‑to‑face is taken before and after any transitions.
Model YMCA values to campers, parents, and staff; develop appropriate relationships and uphold boundaries.
Act as a staff peer leader and set an example for other staff in conduct and appearance.
Use positive, constructive discipline and reinforcement, ensuring all staff do the same.
Communicate expectations and needs clearly to counselors during their period.
Maintain direct communication with supervisors.
Report all accidents or unusual incidents immediately to supervisors and create necessary documentation.
Communicate program information, problems, and concerns as they occur.
Assist in planning and implementing Camp Special Events and Family Night Activities.
Maintain and care for all program areas and sports equipment, respecting property and keeping inventory weekly.
Coordinate camp activities and participate in all aspects of camp program, including special events, openings, closings, and extended hours.
Attend all staff meetings and training sessions, incorporating training materials into daily interactions and work with campers.
Perform other duties as required by supervisors, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to help.
Abide by YMCA/DPH/ACA day camp policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines.
Work Environment
The noise level is usually moderate to high.
Available up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for an 8‑hour shift between 7 am and 6 pm.
Work in indoor and outdoor environments with sun exposure.
Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals at all times.
Must possess the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities (physical games and activities).
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age and have a passion for working with and nurturing children.
Have the ability to work with, develop, and understand the needs of children and set appropriate boundaries.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; some college, and experience preferred. A degree in sports/physical education or equivalent coaching experience is preferred.
Demonstrate a commitment to working with participants from diverse backgrounds.
Understand group processes and work in harmony with other staff.
Commit to the YMCA mission, camp philosophy, policies, and goals.
Utilize effective communication skills.
Hold current First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and CPR certifications, and any others required for the specific camp.
Complete Child Abuse Prevention training within the first four weeks of employment.
Complete Respect in the Workplace (Sexual Harassment Prevention) training.
