Pay Range:
$19.72 – $22.17
Hours of Employment:
12‑hour shifts on a monthly rotation schedule. Current shifts are 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (day) and 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM (night). Overtime regulations apply. Holidays, sick leave, vacation, etc. as directed by the Shields employee handbook.
Position Purpose
Ensure product is inspected for quality—size, print, and seal—before shipment to customers. Conduct accurate packaging and data collection for each order. Maintain food safety practices while performing work, participate in GMP and food‑safety training, follow GMP policies, and report all food‑safety concerns promptly.
Functions
Under the direction of the Operator and/or Production Supervisor, the Extrusion Offbearer is responsible for inspecting product prior to shipment to customers. Backup is provided by other Operator Assistants or by an Operator.
Duties & Responsibilities
Quality Control
Check job‑ticket extrusion instructions
Note size or gauge tolerances
Document special packaging or labeling instructions
Verify product conforms to job‑ticket specifications
Check and verify size and seal
Complete the “Size and Seal” chart (not S.P.C. charts)
Ensure gussets are set up correctly
Inspect bags for defects, blocking, gels, blending problems, and dirty die face
Use a sample to confirm print is correct; verify ink color on sample swatch
Check product for treat
Calculate bag weight
Packaging
Package products properly and neatly
Obtain correct packaging information from the job ticket
Know pallet and crib sizes and box sizes
Identify location of packaging supplies
Maintain a three‑hour supply of boxes and supplies
Package bags neatly
Data Collection
Enter production data into the computer
Ensure accurate data entries
Weigh every other roll/box and notify the operator if not correct
Weigh all roll stock
Track all scrap and enter data accordingly
Record correct job start and stop times
Accurate Roll and Case Weight
Weigh every other roll/box; notify operator if weight deviates +/- 5% of target
Weigh all rolls for 18" and above
Alternate weighing top and bottom sets for 2‑up and 4‑up rolls 18" and below during roll changes
Weigh complete layers of bags in bins per QC check‑sheet at start‑ups, change‑overs, or shift changes until target weight is achieved
Labeling
Obtain proper labeling information from the job ticket
Print labels correctly and neatly
Center and align labels on the box
Ensure pallet/bin labels are completed accurately
Insert a white label with correct weight into the core
Machinery
Learn operator duties, including downstream equipment and maintenance operations
Perform basic adjustments on bag machinery: change curtains during downtime, replace knife blades, adjust web tension and initial seal setup
Thread all downstream equipment
Understand basic extrusion process and make minor adjustments to stripper for improved bag delivery
Adjust winder tension and understand its effect on roll
Keep tools and metal parts off the floor
Performance Measurements
Quality of product shipped
Attendance
Ability to assist other lines
Cleanliness of work area
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
HS Diploma or GED (preferred).
Required Knowledge
Previous manufacturing experience preferred.
Experience Required
No prior experience required; on‑the‑job training provided.
Training & Development
Participate in continuous training and education sessions.
Access to LITMOS platform, tuition reimbursement, and learning management system.
Skills & Abilities
Read tape measure.
Basic math skills.
Good communication skills.
Pass color‑blind test.
Prior computer data entry experience preferred.
