Position Summary
The Staff Accountant will support all financial accounting functions for a complex nonprofit organization operating multiple government and private funding streams. This role will replace a retiring senior accountant and help lead the accounting team in maintaining GAAP‑compliant financial records, meeting audit requirements, and ensuring accurate fund accounting across programs.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain full cycle accounting for multiple funding sources (government contracts, Dept. for the Aging, state/federal grants, vouchers, private grants).
Oversee and prepare financials in accordance with nonprofit fund accounting and GAAP principles.
Coordinate annual financial audits; prepare schedules and work directly with external auditors.
Ensure compliance with grant requirements, contract terms, and audit standards.
Reconcile accounts, manage month‑end close procedures, and prepare journal entries.
Monitor and analyze revenue/expense activity across programs; ensure proper grant classification.
Support budgeting and financial reporting; work with Budget Analyst and broader finance team.
Supervise/mentor junior accounting staff and coordinate with AP, Payroll, and Budget functions.
Assist with system improvements and potential transition to a new accounting platform (future Sage Intacct implementation).
Team Structure
Finance team of 6, including:
2 Junior Accountants
1 Accounts Payable Specialist
1 Budget Analyst
1 Payroll Specialist
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
3+ years of accounting experience, nonprofit fund accounting strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit compliance.
Experience with financial audits and working with external auditors.
Proficiency with accounting systems (experience with FundEZ and PASSport a plus; Sage Intacct experience a bonus).
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
