Lockheed Martin Space is the prime contractor building NASA’s Orion, the only spacecraft designed for long-duration, human-rated deep space exploration. Orion will transport astronauts to interplanetary destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as the Moon and Mars, and return them safely back to Earth.
Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer on the Orion Program, you will be responsible for providing technical engineering support tasks for the Aeroshell and Structures team. Design tasks include sustainment of composite and metallic structural components and Thermal Protection System (TPS) hardware across the vehicle. As a design engineer, you must understand and execute design activities to meet technical, cost, and schedule requirements. You will coordinate with other Aeroshell and Structures senior engineers and Engineering Management to perform responsibilities associated with the design sustainment, certification and delivery of Aeroshell, Structures, and TPS components of the spacecraft.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s or higher degree (Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or closely related field preferred)
Understanding of Aeroshell, Structural, and/or Thermal Protection components design, manufacturing, and materials
US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
Desired Skills
Knowledge of composite structure design and fabrication
Knowledge of metallic structure design and fabrication
Knowledge of thermal protection materials design, fabrication, and testing
Experience interpreting and implementing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Experience creating 3D models and drawings; CREO parametric preferred. Experience with Fibersim (CREO extension).
Experience with Windchill or other Product Data Management (PDM) systems
Strong communication skills for coordinating with other engineering and production peers
Knowledge of design verification and certification process
Experience with design for manufacture or producibility, traditional fabrication equipment (mills, lathes, sheet metal, welding, composite layup, etc.), and 3D printing
Experience working with suppliers
