Job Overview
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is hiring a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Montrose, CO.
Compensation:
Total annual compensation is $53,400 ($2,053.85 biweekly). Overtime is paid at $38.50 per hour.
Responsibilities
Plowing snow.
Operating heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, and tractor mowers.
Mowing grass and weeds.
Removing debris from roadways, including rock, mud, and deceased animals.
Removing debris from culverts and tunnels.
Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt.
Digging ditches.
Installing and repairing guardrail, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting.
Filling potholes and roadway cracks.
Setting out signs and cones for traffic control.
Removing and covering graffiti.
Installing pavement markings and striping.
Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations.
Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs.
Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment.

Requirement to use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic.
Use of ladders and scissor lifts at heights of approximately 10–20 feet.
Requirement to drive CDOT vehicles.
Frequent response to emergencies outside regular hours, including overtime on weekends and holidays.
Willingness and physical ability to work in extreme temperatures and variable weather conditions, and at elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods.
Minimum Qualifications
At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience.

Conditions of Employment
Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restriction.
If holding a non‑Colorado CDL, be eligible to drive in Colorado at hire and transfer the license within 30 days of relocation.
Pass pre‑employment screening (social security, criminal records, public court records, education, and driving records).
May be required to pass a controlled substance test and a DOT medical physical.
On‑call work on a rotating basis and subject to call.
Shift work and essential services designation.
May be required to live within 30 minutes’ driving time of a duty station.
New employees complete two weeks of maintenance training; veteran employees complete one week yearly.
May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year.
Willingness to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including overtime on weekends and holidays.
