
Assistant Signal Maintainer

Summary
The Assistant Signal Maintainer position is an entry‑level position within the Engineering Department – Signal at New Jersey Transit Rail Operations. Signal Maintainers are responsible for the installation, testing, and maintenance of all equipment associated with railroad signaling including highway grade crossings, electrical/mechanical switches, and railway traffic control signals. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions at various locations across New Jersey’s 11 passenger rail lines.
Employees are subject to a 90‑day probationary period. Upon successful completion, assistant signalmen are enrolled in NJ TRANSIT’s Signal Training program and must pass eight company‑sponsored training modules within two years to be promoted to Signal Maintainer and retain permanent employment.
Roles and Responsibilities
Assist fellow Signal Department employees with installation, testing, and maintenance of signal apparatus.
Excavate railroad right‑of‑ways for cable/conduit installations.
Cut tree limbs and brush overgrowth interfering with signal systems.
Climb stairwells and ladders with fall‑prevention equipment to perform work.
Work on fixed overhead rail bridges.
Clean and paint exterior and interior signal equipment housings.
Transport employees, supplies, and equipment to various locations with company vehicles.
Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Pass NJ TRANSIT’s Signal Maintainer Aptitude Test.
Basic knowledge of electricity: series and parallel circuits, Ohm’s Law, resistance.
Basic knowledge of electronics: diodes, capacitors, rectifiers, circuit boards.
Ability to learn and use various electrical measuring instruments.
Successfully pass background, drug screening, and physical.
Work various shifts, holidays, and weekends.
Have a valid driver’s license.
Have a high school diploma or GED.
Physical Demands
Perform digging, lifting, and climbing.
Use hand and power tools.
Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including confined spaces.
Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, safety glasses, and safety‑toe boots.
Perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
Apply pushing and pulling force up to 60 pounds during manual cranking of railroad switches.
