Certification:
Valid Oklahoma driver’s license or ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire and pass driver’s history check. Completion of OKC Zoo Global Academy training in the first six (6) months of employment.
Other:
This position is safety sensitive; subject to pre-employment and/or periodic background checks and drug testing. Requires annual tuberculosis testing due to exposure to animals.
Job Summary:
The Grounds and Exhibits Technician primarily maintains the elephant and rhinoceros exhibits and environments. Works closely with the elephant, rhino, horticulture, and grounds teams to maintain safety and appearance of the Zoo and exhibits.
Maintain a high level of safety when working with and around the assigned animal collection through implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
Maintain and renovate exhibits, service areas, and equipment.
Work in assigned areas as part of a team that supports animal caretakers, grounds and horticulture.
Mow, weed eat, pull weeds, apply mulch, prune trees, and load plant debris.
Clean and clear roads and pathways (e.g. snow removal, power washing, trash pick-up, backpack blowing).
Operate tools and equipment (e.g. skid‑steer, tractor, mower, street sweeper, blowers, chainsaw, tiller, chipper, etc.).
Provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
Actively promote and contribute to the Oklahoma City Zoo’s sustainability initiatives and green practices.
Communicate effectively with the Management on the status of projects.
Complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines.
May oversee part time staff and volunteers.
Driving around the Oklahoma City area throughout the year.
Collaborate with other zoo departments.
Support OKC Zoo’s strategic management plans and institutional goals.
Foster constructive attitudes and team orientation among staff; positively communicate and collaborate with Zoo personnel and professional colleagues.
Represents the zoo in a professional manner.
Participate in and respond to safety-related issues and drills.
Work effectively in a team environment, including volunteers.
Plan and organize work projects for the areas assigned; acquire supplies and materials.
Participate in conservation activities that support the zoo’s mission.
