About the Job
The Finance Professional position is an integral member of the Morrill Hall Shared Services Team (MHSST) responsible for non-sponsored and/or sponsored finance management functions focusing on budgeting, reporting and forecasting, transaction support and approval, and reconciliation for assigned units. The position requires knowledge of accounting principles as well as University policy. The position reports to the team's Finance Manager 3.

This is a 100% time, 12‑month Civil Service position as Finance Professional 4 (job code 8224FG). The employee will work a hybrid schedule with some occasional in‑office work on the Twin Cities campus.

Duties and Responsibilities
Departmental Finance Administration & Operations (50%)

Responsible for financial management and fiscal operation of assigned units.

Develop annual preliminary budget development worksheet and detailed budget models in conjunction with departmental leadership.

Meet regularly with departmental directors to review financial reports and projections, identifying potential funds or compliance problems and recommend solutions to the identified problems.

Coordinate with departmental leadership regarding potential deficits.

Serve as the financial expert over the entire life of a grant from award set up to closure.

Financial Documentation Analysis (30%)

Analyze, review and approve all financial documents (i.e., requisitions, vouchers, reimbursements, PCards, and journal entries) with consideration to fund availability and budget plan.

Interpret and apply financial policies to support departmental programming, including grant and contract regulations and their relation to University accounting procedures.

Coordinate year‑end closeout of operational budgets.

Submit service requests to the Finance Operations Center for general ledger accounting, payroll accounting, accounts receivable and billing, purchasing and accounts payable and assist/direct department staff on the procedure as appropriate.

Interpersonal and Support (10%)

Build, foster and maintain positive professional relationships with unit staff.

Facilitate the resolution of complicated financial transactions.

Serve as the information source/point of contact for department staff; assist, advise and train them on accounting policies and procedures.

Budget Monitoring and HR Coordination (10%)

Monitor monthly activity and forecast annual performance of operational budgets.

Monitor available funding within designated Foundation funds.

Work closely with cluster HR/Payroll staff to ensure Human Resource expense is accurate and is aligned with Budget Plan.

Work within the larger Shared Services Team in a back‑up capacity as needed.

Continue professional development through attendance of courses, workshops, seminars, and other meetings.

Essential Qualifications

BA/BS degree with at least five (5) years of professional accounting work experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal nine (9) years.

Proficient in using Microsoft Excel and online reporting tools.

Experience with financial reporting, monitoring, analysis, and forecasting.

Prior experience with planning and implementing budgets.

Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple and sometimes competing projects and assignments.

Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate well with people from a variety of backgrounds, communities, and identities.

Preferred Qualifications

Motivated self‑starter with strong attention to detail.

Experience with U of MN PeopleSoft Financials (EFS).

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with University financial policies and procedures.

Project accounting, including sponsored research accounting and appointment as a Certified Approver.

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range:

$89,000 – $95,000 annually, depending on education/qualifications/experience.

Time Appointment:

100% – 12‑month appointment.
