Duties

Performs a variety of trades and craft duties involving maintenance, repair and improvement of facilities. Duties require the use of trade practices associated with carpentry, painting, and laboring work. Performs other duties as assigned.

Assists in the maintenance and repair of building interiors, exteriors and grounds. Patches and paints walls, replaces faucet washers, bulbs and fuses. Un‑stops sinks and toilet bowls. Hangs electrical fixtures and repairs screens and storm sashes.

Prepares surfaces for painting by applying sealing compounds and primers. Finishes rough edges, smooths with emery cloth and sandpaper. Carries, lifts and holds materials during repairs. Nails loose boards and replaces window glass.

Makes minor repairs to furniture and woodwork. Occasionally assist in moving furniture or refinishing appearances. Paints surfaces, cuts grass, plants, trims hedges, trees and shrubbery. Dumps trash, waters plants and sweeps walkways.

May be required to operate up to 1 Ton motor vehicle to and from worksite to transport material and personnel. If required to operate a motor vehicle, prepares trip tickets, performs driver's daily maintenance and reports needed to supervisor.

Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E‑Verify) check.

Satisfactory completion of all pre‑employment checks in accordance with AR 215‑3, Chapter 2, to include a medical examination and Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally controlled facilities.

Incumbent must be willing and able to work varying shifts to include days, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Incumbent must be willing and able to complete a physical.

Work is performed inside and outside of buildings and is usually dusty, dirty and greasy. When outside, worker is exposed to extreme hot, cold, wet and dry conditions.

The possibility of electrical shock, cuts, burns, and bruises exists. Wears safety equipment incidental to the position.

If the incumbent is required to operate a vehicle, the position is subject to mandatory drug testing.

Works under general supervision performing the simpler and more routine duties of the craft or trade work assigned.

Work is reviewed in progress or upon completion and evaluated for compliance with instructions, adequacy of performance and timeliness in completion.

If required to operate a vehicle, operates in accordance with standard procedures.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May carry equipment, tools or supplies weighing from 40 to 80 pounds.

Qualifications

Experience in performing duties as described above.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions involving those duties.

Must have a working knowledge of wood working techniques and basic shop mathematics.

Must be skilled in use and operation of common hand and power tools and measuring devices of the carpentry and painting trades to perform a variety of tasks.

Must have knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques.

Must have ability to read and follow basic blueprints and sketches.

Vehicle Operation Requirements (if applicable)

The incumbent must have a valid driver's license.

Must have skills and knowledge to accomplish safe operation of vehicles.

Allowances and Differentials

This job falls under the Federal Wage Schedule (FWS) pay system. FWS employees earn overtime pay for working more than 8 hours in a day or more than 40 hours in a week – whichever gives the employee more benefit. Regular full‑time, regular part‑time, and regularly scheduled flexible employees may receive Sunday premium pay for working on Sundays. Employees may also be eligible to receive extra pay if the majority of their scheduled hours falls after 3:00 PM.

Non‑foreign overseas allowances, cost of living (COLA), and differentials will not be paid, contingent upon eligibility.

Access to Federal Facilities

Access to certain federal facilities may require a REAL‑ID compliant driver's license/ID (marked with a star) or an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) from WA, MI, MN, NY, or VT.

Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Costs

Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs are not authorized based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government's interest.
