
Controller

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Controller will be responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal control environment. This position will ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of the company’s financial information while establishing scalable accounting processes that support the organization’s continued growth.
This role will lead the day-to-day accounting function, manage the monthly close and financial reporting processes, and ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax requirements, and regulatory obligations. The Controller will also partner closely with the Vice President of Finance and senior leadership to improve financial visibility, strengthen internal controls, and support strategic decision-making across the organization.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical accounting foundation, leadership experience, and the ability to build and enhance financial processes within a growing business environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
FINANCIAL REPORTING & CLOSE PROCESS
Lead the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Manage the monthly close process and continuously improve close efficiency and reporting accuracy.
Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable accounting standards.
Oversee balance sheet reconciliations and maintain integrity of the general ledger.
Produce internal financial reports and variance analyses to support management decision-making.
ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS
Oversee all core accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting.
Establish and maintain robust accounting policies and procedures.
Ensure appropriate documentation and audit trails are maintained across all financial transactions.
Manage day-to-day accounting operations and supervise accounting staff.
INTERNAL CONTROLS & COMPLIANCE
Design and maintain a strong internal control framework to safeguard company assets.
Ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax requirements, and corporate policies.
Lead preparation for external audits and coordinate with auditors, tax advisors, and other external partners.
Identify opportunities to strengthen financial governance and risk management practices.
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT & SYSTEMS
Implement and improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and financial workflows.
Drive automation and efficiency improvements across the finance and accounting function.
Support the implementation of scalable financial infrastructure to be added company growth.
BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
Partner with the Vice President of Finance to support financial planning, budgeting, and strategic initiatives.
Provide financial insights and reporting to business leaders to support operational decision-making.
Assist with financial diligence, acquisitions, and integration activities when applicable.
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT & SYSTEMS
Build, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
Establish clear performance expectations and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Ensure the finance organization maintains high professional standards and operational excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA required)
8+ years of progressive accounting experience
Experience in maritime, shipping, offshore services, logistics, or other asset-intensive industries strongly preferred
Experience in a private equity-backed or leveraged environment preferred
Strong knowledge of GAAP, fixed asset accounting, and multi-entity consolidations
Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite, Sage, SAP, or similar)
