Overview

The ideal candidate for this position will provide evaluation and analysis of construction accidents, construction defects, professional liability claims, builders risk, vibration claims, construction equipment failures, crane and rigging failure and accidents, construction surety bond claims, standard of care, subcontractor default, forensic delay. In addition, the candidate will deliver forensic consulting services requiring civil/structural engineering expertise for insurance, legal, industrial, and other clients. They will assess and determine the cause and origin of structural failures and/or damage, building envelope failures and/or damage, construction delays, and construction defects, as well as determine the extent and repairability of such failures and/or damage. The candidate will also provide oral and written reports of findings and, when needed, expert testimony and will be managing multiple projects.
Essential Job Functions

Perform the investigation and analysis of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to resolve client questions regarding claims and legal matters.
Perform forensic assignments within the field of civil/structural engineering expertise based upon a scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client in advance of performing the work.
Study and determine the cause and origin of construction defects, delays, or structural failures and/or damage and building envelope failures and/or damage, as well as determine the extent and repairability of such failures and/or damage. This includes gathering photographic evidence, conducting on‑site investigations, conducting in‑person and/or telephone interviews, overseeing field testing, reviewing construction and design drawings, contracts and specifications, and reviewing historical documentation.
Prepare oral and written reports to document the causes of delay, failure, and/or damage, extent of loss, associated repair scope, estimated damages, and recommended remediation. Provide opinions and expert testimony in litigation matters.
Manage multiple projects, coordinating with other experts and supporting as needed to produce client reports promptly.
Initiate, develop, and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.
Required Experience, Education, and Certifications

Civil or Structural Engineering degree or higher.
General Contractor license preferred.
A South Carolina Professional Engineering license is required, or the ability to obtain it quickly.
NCEES record preferred.
5+ years of experience.
Construction Management and/or Field Investigation experience preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities

Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
High level of analytical skills, attention to detail, ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Knowledge of various computer software applications including Microsoft Office, estimating software, and computer‑assisted engineering and design software.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret construction documents, contracts, specifications, technical reports, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to write scopes of work, budget estimates, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, repair estimates, and other technical documents.
Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients and effectively present information to leadership, clients, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel Requirements

Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on sloped roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, crawl under homes, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. Employees may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Overtime may be required. The position requires up to 50% local/regional travel.
