Claims Technician - Workers' Compensation
This role gives you the opportunity to directly support our employees’ wellbeing while managing medical-only workers’ compensation claims. You will receive, evaluate, and handle medical only workers' compensation claims. You will coordinate care, review and approve referrals, and timely file all necessary paperwork with the Division of Workers’ Compensation. You will also conduct interviews with the injured worker, supervisor, and witnesses to determine compensability and pay expenses, document claims activity, and bring claim to conclusion.

This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year.

As a Claims Technician I - Workers' Compensation, you will:

Intake initial claim information; create claim related documents for distribution.

Determine compensability of the claim.

Establish reserves and authorize payments within reserving authority limits.

Manage medical-only claims; provide pertinent information to claimants.

Communicate claim status with the claimant and management.

Adhere to City guidelines for claim management.

Assist staff with more complex or problematic claims as necessary.

Ensure appropriate and timely management of claims.

Timely file reports, admissions, and other communications with the Division of Workers’ Compensation.

Coordinate care with the City’s Occupational Health Clinic: approve and coordinate care referrals.

Timely review and approve bills in the City’s billing system.

Other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Knowledge of patient care reporting and basic medical terminology

Knowledge of pertinent statutes, codes, rules, and regulations

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

Excellent communication, organizational, presentation, and customer service skills

High school diploma or GED

One year of full-time claims experience related to workers' compensation

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, human resources, or a related field
