What you will be doing
Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user‑agency vehicles being operated in the area.
The incumbent must resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods, performing routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems—including air and electrical—for light‑ and heavy‑duty equipment.

Working Environment You Can Expect
The position is located at 2301 Peger Road, Fairbanks, AK. Traveling in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible; travel consists of day trips and overnight stays. Employees of DOT&PF work in various locations, including remote and urban centers, addressing a wide range of transportation needs amid Alaska’s rugged terrain and extreme weather. Qualifications
Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
Flexibility: Ability to adapt to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
Vehicle Maintenance: Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
Self‑Management: Sets well‑defined goals, demonstrates initiative, completes assignments timely, works with minimal supervision, is motivated, and demonstrates responsible behavior.
Education and/or experience that provides the core competencies listed above is required.

Commercial Driver’s License Required
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383) and to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety‑sensitive duties. Hire approval is conditional on obtaining a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License within 120 days of hire and signing an agreement to this effect. Selected candidates must comply with DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and must not commence work in a CDL position until completion of the required pre‑employment drug test. Employees must provide their own hand tools and will be paid a bi‑weekly tool allowance as determined by LTC contract.
