Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Registered Radiologic Assistant. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for medical histories, patient monitoring, and diagnostic tests. Performs a patient risk assessment geared toward the relevant data needed for the patient’s radiologic exam. Monitors patients under the care of the Supervising Physician during radiologic exams. Recognizes and responds to medical emergencies and activates emergency response systems, including notification of the radiologist. Verifies appropriateness of radiologic diagnostic procedures in accordance with criteria established by the Department of Radiology and the supervising physician and performs certain procedures. Attends conferences as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
Documents any adverse occurrence, reaction, extravasation on department forms and in computer if required.
Follows up calls made to the patient within 24 hours after an adverse reaction or extravasation.
Obtains informed consent.
Interacts with the radiologist when needed and ensures questions are answered appropriately.
Determines if patient has followed instructions in preparation for the exam (e.g., diet, pre-medications).
Assesses risk factors that may contraindicate the procedure (e.g., health history, medications, pregnancy, psychological indicators, alternative medicines) as reviewed by the radiologist.
Obtains and evaluates vital signs; performs limited physical examination as appropriate; records data in the medical record.
Presents information to the Supervisor or Attending Physician in a concise and meaningful manner.
Reviews the patient’s medical record to verify exam appropriateness and reports significant findings to the radiologist; interviews patient to obtain or update medical history.
Explains procedure to patient or significant others, including risks, benefits, alternatives, and follow-up. Ensures patient can communicate with the radiologist when questions arise.
Verifies appropriate tests and medications according to criteria established by the supervising physician and explains the necessity and preparation for scheduled diagnostic radiologic procedures.
Ensures proper documentation of all procedures in the medical record.
Explains effects and potential side effects of medications used for the examination.
Administers contrast agents and radiopharmaceuticals as prescribed; monitors patient for side effects or complications.
Administers general medications as prescribed and monitors for reactions; notes that medications exclude contrast media and radiopharmaceuticals for purposes of this document.
Performs fluoroscopic examinations and related procedures, including contrast media administration and operation of fluoroscopic unit; documents fluoroscopy time and evaluates image quality.
Operates imaging equipment and communicates radiologist observations; records initial observations per approved protocols.
Communicates radiologist reports to referring physicians in accordance with guidelines; provides post-care instructions to patients.
Performs follow-up patient evaluation and communicates findings to the radiologist; documents procedures and exceptions from established protocols.
Participates in quality improvement activities and supports clinical studies or research as applicable.
Supports professional growth and maintains current expertise; meets CME requirements for re-appointment and privileging; maintains radiologist assistant board certification.
Serves as a clinical resource for education and participates in conferences and lectures as assigned; pursues ongoing professional development.
Contributes to development and monitoring of patient outcomes per established practice protocols and supports evidence-based practice changes within the service.
Collaborates with nursing and other disciplines on clinical studies within the area of expertise; assists with research protocols when applicable.
Monitors and trends cost effectiveness related to the position and coordinates clinical research activities, including patient screening, enrollment, and data collection.
Recognizes and responds to medical emergencies and adverse reactions, including IV contrast reactions; maintains BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications; checks emergency medications monthly and updates as needed.
Recognizes and initiates treatment for anaphylaxis and follows backup procedures during emergencies; reports adverse reactions to the attending radiologist and the referring physician as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of an A.S.R.T-approved Registered Radiologist Assistant Program
Current registration by the New York State Department of Education as a Registered Radiologic Assistant (R.R.A.)
