General Summary
Under general supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities
Perform routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests on laboratory specimens using manual or automated techniques and information systems for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treating disease.
Apply knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or develop solutions, collaborating with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problems.
Evaluate instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release.
Correlate results with other lab data and/or disease states, identifying technical, instrument, pharmacologic, and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results.
Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments, and laboratory information systems.
Following successful completion of competency testing, may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.
Comply with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control, while maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
Participate in various quality assessment and improvement activities such as proficiency testing, data gathering for quality assurance monitors, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees, and completing regular competency assessments, ensuring the laboratory and procedures remain inspection ready.
Education and Experience Required
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with coursework aligned to the duties of the specific medical laboratory discipline.
Must meet the education eligibility routes listed on the ASCP website (ascp.org) for a Medical Laboratory Scientist, or possess categorical scientist level certification (BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB) or have met requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.
Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting, demonstrating technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform duties.
