Job Purpose
The Quality Technician monitors and performs qualitative and quantitative testing of process and product attributes to ensure food safety and quality. The role ensures compliance with the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, GFSI standards, and third‑party audits such as Siliker, Kosher, and Organic. The Technician keeps documentation for non‑conforming product, releases product that meets specifications, and communicates findings to plant management.
Responsibilities
Check butterfat, total solids, pH, acidity, flavor, odor, cryoscopy, viscosity, brix, HR‑1, 2 & 3, temperatures, antibiotics, coliform, DMC, DMSCC and SPC.
Calculate formulas and accelerated shelf‑life testing.
Perform in‑plant weight checks, temperature checks, ingredient usage and distribution, and code‑date verification.
Conduct environmental testing and pre‑op swabbing and maintain all records.
Perform pathogen monitoring on raw and finished products and maintain results.
Hold, release, or reject finished goods and raw materials.
Maintain lab records, internal and external lab results, inspection reports, vitamin log, water and glycol records.
Coordinate and maintain third‑party laboratory testing programs.
Maintain proper calibration standards.
Conduct daily finished‑product evaluation and Appendix N antibiotic testing.
Assist with state and federal lab inspections.
Perform sensory evaluation of raw material and finished product.
Help control plant losses.
Complete duties consistent with all company safety rules and GMPs.
Perform related duties assigned by the Manager or Supervisor on duty.
Manage microbiological testing/documentation, interpret results, retest or report abnormalities, and generate standard reports.
Inspect processing areas to ensure documentation is present, correct, and compliant with GMPs and sanitation requirements.
Perform Quality Team Audits, including GMPs and Housekeeping.
Manage laboratory operations, maintain lab equipment and supplies.
Work with chemicals.
Qualifications
High School diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in a science field or equivalent education and experience preferred.
At least one year with laboratory experience in microbiology and chemistry; food‑production experience preferred.
Accurate and precise testing procedures and mix‑formulation calculations; keen sense of odors and flavors.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to read, write, and interpret safety rules, procedure manuals, and mathematical calculations.
Ability to read, comprehend, and follow technical instructions and present information to individuals and groups.
Normal hearing ability and fluency in spoken English.
Proficiency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure.
Use commonsense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions and calculations.
Prioritization and organization skills.
Decision‑making ability to assess test results and determine best actions.
Basic computer skills; knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, MS Office, and SAP preferred.
Knowledge of GMPs, safety programs, and procedures.
Ability to handle ambiguity and work in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Proficiency in written and verbal English communication.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Up to 12 hours of sitting, standing, and walking.
Lift up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Exposure to hazards such as machinery and confined spaces.
Work in and around loud noise levels, industrial machinery, and air‑conditioned environments.
Operate motorized vehicles or equipment.
Food Safety Requirements
Notify supervision of any repairs or adjustments that may affect product quality or food safety.
Understand, observe, and comply with the color‑coded container policy while in production areas.
Perform all duties necessary to meet company, customer, and governmental requirements and standards.
Initiate actions to prevent nonconformities in food safety and product quality.
Identify and record problems related to food safety, ingredient quality, process quality, quality system, or safety system.
Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product until deficiencies are corrected.
Assume duties when another employee is absent.
