Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) PRN position functions as an advanced practice practitioner responsible for promoting and maintaining the health of patients requiring surgical care. Practicing medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician, the Surgical PA provides diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and preventive care across the continuum of care. The Surgical PA assists licensed physicians in the comprehensive management of patients in all perioperative settings, with a primary focus on serving as a first assistant during surgical procedures. Responsibilities include endoscopic vein harvesting and other cardiothoracic first-assist duties. This role supports continuity of care through preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient management in operating room, inpatient, and outpatient settings, and may function independently under physician supervision or as part of a multidisciplinary care team.
All care is delivered in accordance with the Texas Board of Physician Assistant Examiners regulations and Houston Methodist policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree
Graduate from accredited Physician Assistant program by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
EXPERIENCE

One year of Cardiovascular surgical experience

PA - Physician Assistant - State Licensure - Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
PA-C - Physician Assistant-Certified (NCCPA) - National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant
DEA - Narcotics License (DEA) - Drug Enforcement Administration
BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association

Demonstrates leadership as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate. Participates in rounding independently or with physicians/surgeons and attends interdisciplinary rounds, as appropriate, by specialty.

Coordinates appropriate, timely patient care between health care providers and other ancillary clinicians under a physician license, focusing on identified expected outcomes and individualized to the patient. Aims to improve patient satisfaction through service standards and accountability.
Collaborates to provide first-assist and/or second-assist surgical services as needed.
Responds to patient questions/issues as triaged by clinical staff and provides assistance for emergencies as needed.

Performs independent or delegated functions under physician license, including diagnosis, prescriptive authority, and treatment according to practice guidelines and standing orders.
Reviews medications and test reports, responds to critical results, and advises on corrective actions as appropriate
Conducts comprehensive health assessments (initial, ongoing, discharge), develops care plans, initiates interventions, and evaluates outcomes for defined patient populations
Develops and implements protocols to ensure patient safety and contributes to professional practice standards and improvements in safety-related processes
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs accurate and timely documentation in medical records, including diagnosis and CPT coding
Supports department strategies to achieve financial targets and improve efficiency and resource use

Identifies and implements innovative solutions to improve patient care or department operations; leads or participates in department/hospital projects
