Overview
Banner Thunderbird Medical Center’s Emergency Department is seeking a full‑time Health Unit Coordinator. The role provides administrative support and customer service within a designated patient care area, facilitating communication among physicians, nurses, consults and other internal and external contacts. The position works three 12‑hour shifts per week from 6 am‑6:30 pm, including rotating weekends and holidays, and offers a flat $1‑per‑hour weekend differential and an 18 % night shift differential.

Core Functions

Perform receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective communication flow throughout the department.

Process patient admissions, record bed assignments, create face sheets, print patient labels, and order outside records from other facilities and physician offices.

Maintain complete patient records with admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms; ensure all reports and chart forms are scanned, filed, and labeled as required.

Enter pending discharges and coordinate patient appointments for procedures or treatments required prior to timely discharge, then process patient discharges.

Maintain adequate levels of office, dietary and medical supplies, complete requisition forms, and reconcile supply orders upon delivery.

Monitor and track electronic equipment such as patient‑ID scanners and laptops, ensuring everything is accounted for and in working order.

Work under local supervision, responsible for the assigned unit only, and provide a fast‑paced, customer‑service–focused environment. Interact with unit secretaries, staff at all levels, patients, families, physicians, case managers and external contacts.

Minimum Qualifications

High‑school diploma, GED or equivalent.

One year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office, or prior customer‑service experience.

Excellent organizational, human‑relations and communication skills.

Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy; proficiency with common office software and keyboarding.

Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required for employees at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, Boswell Skilled Nursing Facility or the Whole Health Clinic.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of an approved unit secretary program.

BLS certification.
