Preschool Speech Therapist - Itinerant

Job type: Full-time 40 hours per week, calendar year. Position located at CDS Downeast site in Machias. Local travel is required across Hancock and Washington counties.

Salary Range : $53,102 – $92,082

Job Overview
Responsible for evaluating and providing speech therapy services to children birth through 5 years. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team and the IFSP/IEP team, ensuring services meet IDEA requirements and state regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Parent Communication: Explain the therapist’s role and intake process, answer questions, and provide accurate assessment results.

Evaluation and Assessment: Establish rapport, conduct observations in natural/LRE settings, gather developmental history, administer assessments, and produce evaluation reports.

Recordkeeping and Report Writing: Complete evaluations in compliance with Chapter 101, contribute goals to the IFSP/IEP team, and maintain required reports for MaineCare and other regulators.

IFSP/IEP Team Participation: Report findings, assist with goal development, and collaborate on service plans.

Early Intervention/Special Education Services: Deliver speech therapy as specified by IFSP/IEP and communicate with Case Managers and other providers.

Billing Documentation: Request prescriptions/authorizations, and ensure proper billing to third parties in accordance with CDS practice.

Other Duties: Any other duties deemed necessary by the Site Director.

Minimum Qualifications

State of Maine Speech Therapist License (required for MaineCare billing)

Maine Department of Education Certification 293 (for non‑MaineCare billing)

Successful background, criminal record, fingerprinting, and reference check

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

Master’s Degree in an appropriate field

Knowledge of child development, disabilities, family systems, and special education methods

Ability to interact with a wide variety of people and provide individual/group services in diverse settings

Effective oral and written communication

Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and adapt techniques to varying personalities and environments

Establish rapport with children and parents, and collaborate as a member of an early childhood team

Ability to travel to multiple locations to deliver services

Motivate and treat young children
