Job Description
The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking an experienced surgical coder to perform highly specialized diagnosis and procedural coding for all operative procedures and inpatient consulting services performed by the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery, including those performed in Gainesville and at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, surgical and medical terminology coding, a working knowledge of the billing requirements of insurance carriers, and the operating procedures of the department and the hospital(s). The Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida, College of Medicine is committed to providing comprehensive clinical services for the diagnosis, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from diseases of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system.
Responsibilities:
Perform highly specialized diagnosis and procedural coding for operative procedures and inpatient consulting services.
Review operative reports and progress notes to determine documentation of billable services and verify or apply appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes.
Confirm physician attestation statements and ensure all necessary documentation is in place.
Provide guidance and education to attending surgeons, fellows, and residents on coding issues, and research coding questions through professional associations and payer guidelines.
Meet with Department Chair or Administrator to review individual or product line coding issues.
Verify patient demographic and insurance data for accuracy, resolve discrepancies, and ensure no unsigned or missing operative records.
Enter charges for surgical cases and non‑surgical inpatient events, and conduct chart reviews for regulatory and coding compliance.
Monitor and correct all TES edits in the Epic system, set up guarantor accounts, add insurance information, and fill out claim information records for each charge.
Collaborate with department leadership to develop processes to positively impact the revenue cycle and insurance collections, and analyze denial and write‑off trends.
Work closely with the Assistant Director to determine charges and attend monthly meetings with the Coder’s Forum.
Conduct independent research, prepare reports, and remain current on coding changes and neurosurgical coding best practices.
Train faculty members and residents on coding and billing methods, assist with resolving coding questions, and serve as liaison to internal and external entities.
Expected Salary
$25.40 – $28.38 per hour
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent and five years of experience in professional medical coding, with experience in two or three clinical specialties.
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) / American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS‑P) required.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of medical terminology and surgical coding.
Knowledge of business and office practice.
Knowledge of Excel and other applicable software.
Ability to analyze financial data and generate understandable reports.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Veteran Preference
