Position Summary
The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care and support within the ambulatory setting. The Medical Assistant accurately completes patient interviews, collects appropriate specimens, assists the physician with patient exams, maintains departmental inventory, provides patient education, and ensures quality direct patient care and non-professional services as directed by the Physician. This position is also responsible for performing the following as required by position: phlebotomy for diagnostic studies, CLIA waived testing. This position may also complete EKGs and drug and alcohol testing. The position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
As part of the Virtualist Program, the position is responsible for collecting patient intakes remotely and assisting in telehealth visits as directed by the physician. This position is not responsible for hands‑on patient exams and procedures, collecting specimens, or phlebotomy for diagnostic studies. For this program, BLS certification is excluded.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of a Medical Assistant program required.
Licensing/Certification: Certification in Phlebotomy ASCP preferred. BLSHCP certification required within six months of hire or transfer. Must be a graduate of a post‑secondary Medical Assistant program accredited by a national accreding agency, with a minimum of 330 hours of instruction, with special training around medication administration as per the NJ Board of Medical Examiners required. All Certified Medical Assistants must maintain active National Certification with an approved agency.
Experience: 1–3 years of prior experience in ambulatory care preferred. Able to handle high volume of interactions with frequent interruptions. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30‑60 days from date of hire.

Work Environment
Potential exposure to hazards and risk of the medical office environment, blood‑borne pathogens, infectious disease, hazardous substances, and potential injury. Requires reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, sitting, standing, walking, long telephone work, and lifting 25‑50 lbs, occasionally 50‑100 lbs. Periodic traveling to other department locations is expected.

This position reports to department leadership as assigned.
