Location: Melrose/Wakefield Hospital – 585 Lebanon Street, Melrose, MA

Hours: 36 hours per week – Night shift with differentials. Shift times: 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. & every other weekend shifts required (Saturday & Sunday).

Job Overview
The Respiratory Therapist sets up equipment to administer prescribed doses of medicinal gases and aerosolized drugs, and administers all types of therapy including gas therapy, aerosol therapy, ventilatory assistance, and cardio‑pulmonary resuscitation.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program.

Licensed by the state of Massachusetts to provide respiratory care.

Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Two years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Care program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assess and deliver therapeutic and diagnostic pulmonary care to patients of all ages in inpatient, outpatient, and sub‑acute settings.

Administer and document all procedures per department policy and procedure, and effectively communicate therapy suggestions to physicians and nurses.

Comply fully with department policy and procedure for operating blood gas machines and handling samples.

Administer adult and geriatric ventilator care, aerosol therapy, medical gas therapy, and bronchial hygiene therapy according to physician orders and departmental policy.

Perform oral, nasotracheal, endotracheal, and tracheal suctioning as needed, in accordance with departmental policy.

In the Special Care Nursery, administer and document all procedures per department policy, and communicate therapy suggestions to physicians and nurses.

Perform oximetry as per policy and recognize inaccurate results.

Prioritize tasks by planning and organizing time effectively, and respond appropriately to stabilize crisis situations.

Check equipment and materials before each workday to ensure proper functioning and adequate supplies.

Formulate care plans with input from patients and families, when appropriate.

Establish measurement goals and communicate this information to the health care team.

Document all therapies accurately and completely in the medical record.

Use good judgment when interfacing with other staff and exercise tactful communication skills.

Use strong decision‑making skills based on clinical observations and protocols, and seek appropriate advice when in doubt.

Assess potential discharge needs during hospitalization.

Recognize that patient and family teaching are integral to professional care and perform it routinely with appropriate documentation.

Accept and utilize direction and supervision positively without negative response, and demonstrate flexibility by cross‑training within the department.

Complete forms, records, cardexes accurately and on time.

Inform supervisor of pertinent activities and problems, passing on job‑related information.

Rotate on day, evening, and night tours of duty.

Pay Range
$35.37 – $43.97 per hour.
