Overview

Position Title: Law Clerk

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Full or part-time status: Part-time

Department: Migration and Refugee Services

Reports to: Senior Immigration Trial Attorney

Hiring Range: $21.00 per hour DOE

Primary Function
As a Law Clerk, you will play a pivotal role in our Immigration Program by offering your expertise in legal research, casework support, and comprehensive brief preparation. You will collaborate closely with our seasoned legal professionals, delving into complex immigration matters and providing assistance to clients navigating the legal process.

Responsibilities

Client Communication: Maintain regular and effective communication with clients, informing them about case progress and addressing inquiries and concerns.

Legal Research: Conduct thorough legal research to analyze and understand complex immigration issues, staying updated on evolving precedents and regulations.

Legal Writing: Prepare comprehensive legal documents and written assignments, including briefs, memos, and legal opinions, to support immigration cases.

Immigration Application Preparation: Collaborate in the preparation of immigration applications for filing, ensuring accuracy and completeness in line with relevant legal requirements.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment
This role is in a professional office environment, utilizing standard office equipment, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

While primarily a sedentary role, some filing tasks are involved, including lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasional bending or standing as needed.

Education, Training, and Experience

Educational Background: A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

Law School Enrollment: Current enrollment in an accredited law school is required for this position.

Legal Writing and Research: Strong legal research and writing skills, including familiarity with databases like LexisNexis or Westlaw.

Immigration Law Experience: Prior experience in immigration law is preferred.

Bilingual Proficiency: Proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred to assist a diverse clientele.

Advanced Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to operate these programs effectively.

Keyboarding and Data Entry: Proficiency in keyboarding and data entry to maintain accurate records.

Law Office Experience: Previous law office experience is preferred and beneficial.

Background Screening

Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.

Position Status and Schedule

This position is both temporary and part-time.

Typical schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM with flexibility to accommodate availability.
