Position Summary
The Surgery Center Operating Room Scrub Technician assists the surgical team during surgical and/or invasive procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Technician provides direct patient care as a scrub/instrument person during surgery, arranging the operating room for surgical procedures, ensuring that equipment is functioning properly, preparing and maintaining the sterile field using aseptic technique, anticipating the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology, and assisting with patient positioning under the guidance of the perioperative registered nurse. This position delivers care in a prompt and professional manner, maintaining confidentiality and respect, and supports departmental objectives with quality customer service and performance improvement.
Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited surgical technology program required. Completion of 15 hours of continuing education to remain certified in NJ.
Certification and Skills: BLS certification required upon date of hire or transfer. Surgical Technologist certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required.
Eligible candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
Completion of an accredited surgical technology program or ability to hold and maintain a certified Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification.
Completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology within the Military of the United States.
Evidence of employment practicing surgical technology prior to August 2012.
Active service as a surgical technologist in the U.S. government.
Preferred
Surgery Center experience preferred but not required. Proficiency in clinical applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents will receive training and the skill will be required within 30‑60 days from date of hire. Specialty experience and advanced certification also preferred.

Work Environment
Potential exposure to hazards of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and injury. Position requires prolonged standing, reaching, walking, and the ability to lift up to 60 lbs., as well as good hand/eye coordination, finger/hand dexterity, visual and hearing acuity, and the ability to maintain retraction for long periods.
