Registered Nurse, Per Diem - PACU

University of California - San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, United States

Position Overview
Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision; assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.

Units
The Perianesthesia Care Units at Mt Zion include the Pre-operative (prep), Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACU) and the 23‑Hour Short Stay Unit (overnight observation unit). The team of perianesthesia specialty nurses provides dynamic, compassionate care for a wide variety of surgical patients for adults and adolescents (13 and up) in the ambulatory care setting.

In preparing patients for surgery, we assure their readiness and provide pre‑operative teaching for patients and their families. The priority postoperatively is to physiologically stabilize patients, provide innovative pain management strategies, and integrate family‑centered care. An interdisciplinary team of nurses, surgeons, specialty physicians, anesthesiologists and respiratory therapists work to initiate the recovery from surgery.

The perianesthesia nurses work collaboratively with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. In addition to the Patient Care Manager and other Assistant Unit managers within the perioperative areas, they continuously improve patient safety, efficiency and patient satisfaction.

The 23‑Hour Short Stay unit provides quality care and patient satisfaction for patients who require outpatient extended care. This modality allows more flexibility for different procedures and improves operational efficiency and clinical excellence within the ambulatory surgery center. Nurses in this unit work collaboratively with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to provide an integrated family‑centered patient care experience.
