Position Summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Student Nurse Extern – Constant Observation – Minimum of 23 hours/month (Float Pool).

Job Responsibilities

Performs patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by the professional registered nurse.

Works closely with the professional nurse to determine patient needs, implements care activities, and reports patient/family responses.

Carries out patient assignments under the direct supervision of the registered nurse, with a comprehensive approach to achieve specific outcomes.

Reports to the RN on completed functions and observes the RN in the performance of professional nursing care.

Participates in unit-based quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse.

Provides for hygiene, safety, and comfort needs of assigned patients and assists with activities of daily living.

Uses nursing interventions to prevent complications of bed rest and immobility; supports infection prevention and control guidelines and risk management in patient care.

Measures vital signs, applies clean dressings, and performs intake and output assessments.

Provides oral suctioning and mouth care and utilizes the written patient care plan/clinical pathway to deliver care.

Demonstrates basic age-appropriate care by identifying physical, psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, religious, and development needs and adapting interventions accordingly.

Observes the nursing process (assessment, documentation, planning, interventions, evaluation) under the direction of the registered nurse.

Observes and reports changes in patient condition and environment to the registered nurse; supports patient privacy and confidentiality.

Communicates support and responsiveness to patients, families, and other staff.

With additional training and demonstrated competency, may perform: obtaining 12-lead EKGs and using a glucometer.

Participates in the planning and evaluation of nursing care through conferences.

Maintains documentation of activities and observations with co-signature by the supervising registered nurse.

Interacts with interdisciplinary team members to carry out patient care.

Incorporates NYU Langone Health Service Standards into daily duties and functions as a respectful health care team member.

Participates in classroom or unit-based educational activities and patient teaching; seeks learning resources for identified needs; recognizes limitations and requests assistance when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a BSN program.

Acceptable transcript (GPA of 3.5 or higher) and two clinical references from the School of Nursing.

Successful completion of a written screening questionnaire.

Certification in BLS.

Demonstrates physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.

Salary Transparency
NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with applicable laws. The range for this role is $20.00 - $20.00 hourly. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
