Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Education: Master's degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Graduates of schools in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited.
A doctoral degree in social work may not substitute for the master’s degree.

Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to GS‑0185 series positions must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s level.

English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English, as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Preferred experience includes VA, DOD, or community‑setting experience, incorporating outcome measures, evidence‑based psychotherapies, case management, outpatient clinics, and related activities.
Grade determinations: Advanced practice social workers must hold a license/certification at the advanced practice level and be able to provide supervision. Senior Social Workers (GS‑12) should have at least two years of post‑licensure experience, including one year equivalent to GS‑11.
Advanced practice skills: Specialized interventions, advanced psychosocial and case management, outcome evaluation, consultation, and policy development.
Physical requirements: Typical for the occupation; no pre‑placement examination required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Overall reward and assignment notes: Position remains open until filled, with first cutoff for consideration on 02/25/2026.
May be assigned administrative responsibilities for clinical program development and effectiveness.
Collaborate with treatment team members to provide comprehensive health care services to Veterans, ensuring equity and quality.
Act as BHIP Mental Health Treatment Coordinator (MHTC), assessing, diagnosing, treating, and coordinating veteran care within BHIP and the Mental Health Service Line.
Provide telehealth services across multiple VA sites, including the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System.
Lead staff development, training, coaching, and continuing education for assigned social work staff.
Serve on committees, work groups, task forces at facility, VISN and national levels, or in the community as directed.
Provide significant additional responsibility beyond the full performance grade level.
Work schedule: M‑F, 08:00‑16:30.
Recruitment incentives may be authorized for full‑time, part‑time, or intermittent staff.
Relocation incentives may be authorized under specified conditions; permanent change of station not authorized.
Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply for incentives.
Compensation: Competitive salary with step rate adjustments for qualifications. Paid time off: 37‑50 days per year (13‑26 days of leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 federal holidays). Parent leave: up to 12 weeks after 12 months of employment. Childcare subsidy: up to 25% of eligible costs for eligible employees.
Retirement benefits: Traditional federal pension and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution; insurance includes federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care.
Telework: Ad‑hoc telework is possible; position is not virtual.
