RN New Graduate Nurse – 6 Children’s Acute Care Medicine Unit
UNC Medical Center is hiring New Graduate Nurses for the Pediatric Acute Care Unit for an October 2026 start date.
The unit is a 24‑bed pediatric unit that provides acute and intermediate care for newborns to 21‑year‑olds. Staff are experienced in seizure management, family teaching, central line catheter care, pediatric growth and development, respiratory illness, parenteral nutrition, complex hydration regimens, home ventilators, high‑flow oxygen therapy, and care for pediatric surgical patients. This is a 36‑hour per week position with day
ight and weekday/weekend rotations.
Applicants are expected to hold a North Carolina RN license before starting. Nurses with less than 6 months of RN experience and who graduated less than 12 months before the anticipated start date will qualify for the UNC Medical Center New Graduate Residency program—a year‑long program supporting the transition from academia to practice.
A résumé outlining clinical rotations and a cover letter are strongly encouraged.
Responsibilities
Education: Identify and meet learning needs, attend education programs, use patient education materials, assess readiness to learn of patients/families, and assess developmental levels.
Evaluation of Care: Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance for plan of care, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicate information for continuity of care.
Implementation: Demonstrate competence in caring for complex patients, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, follow organization policies, prioritize care, and consult appropriate resources.
Leadership: Develop professional growth goals, achieve objectives, collaborate on unit goals, use communication systems, promote cost‑effective care, give feedback, and uphold safety and regulatory guidelines.
Patient Assessment: Prioritize care based on assessment data, synthesize information, assess discharge needs, and build relationships with families.
Planning: Collaborate with patient/family to update the plan of care, use multidisciplinary resources, address cultural and ethnic issues, and prioritize tasks.
Research: Read relevant journals and share ideas for practice applicability.
Qualifications
Graduated from a school of professional nursing.
If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a Master’s degree within seven years.
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by first day of clinical care.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
No prior experience required.
