Summary
The Medical Care Transportation Technician - EMT positions are assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) - Ambulance Service in one of the various VA Medical Center (VAMC) locations with an emergency room, acute care or urgent care clinic, or other similar departments performing basic life support procedures. These positions are located at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, Maine.

Qualifications

English language proficiency: must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

Selective Placement Factors (SPF): Three prerequisite factors that must be met for appointment.

Valid state-issued certification for employment as EMT.

Current Basic Life Support Provider (BLS) certification.

Valid state driver's license.

Specialized experience: at least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑06, or

Substitution of education for experience: one year of graduate education directly related to the position from an accredited institution.

Combination of eligible education and experience may be used in lieu of full experience.

Must satisfy all physical requirements and work environment expectations as described below.

Designated drug‑testing position: selected applicants are required to complete a urinalysis.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The role involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients, including bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning. EMTs may work in chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous material incidents, require protective breathing apparatus and clothing, and may be exposed to infection, hazardous substances, or violent patients. Work occurs under all weather and traffic conditions and requires compliance with safety precautions.

Duties

Conduct patient assessments, triage, and record vital signs.

Perform physical examinations and obtain patient history.

Administer basic life support care, including CPR and drug treatments.

Perform invasive and non‑invasive procedures as needed.

Operate emergency vehicles and equipment such as ambulances, extrication tools, AED, oxygen terminal, etc.

Provide treatment as prescribed in protocol and make protocol modifications within limits.

Serve as technical support to Emergency Department when not responding to calls.

Select efficient routes considering traffic patterns.

Adhere to traffic ordinances and maintain vehicle safety and documentation.

Assist in lifting and transporting patients and perform other duties as assigned.

Work rotating shifts, including holidays, with 24‑hour coverage and potential overtime.
