Position Overview


Associate Librarian, Career Status or Potential Career Status – full‑time, 100% position. Start date as early as June 2026. Potential career appointment. Salary range is based on UC academic salary scales, approximately $80,349 to $107,708.


Position Description


Seeking a collaborative, innovative, user‑oriented Archivist for the technical services team at The Bancroft Library. Responsible for access‑forward accessioning and processing of archival collections across a broad range of formats, leading a small team of student assistants, developing policies, and maintaining the local instance of ArchivesSpace.


Responsibilities



  • Accession and process new and existing archival collections in all formats, following national standards and local policies.

  • Create collection‑level MARC records in OCLC and Alma.

  • Create online finding aids and publish them on the Online Archive of California.

  • Apply DACS, RDA, EAD, and MARC standards.

  • Use ArchivesSpace, Alma/Primo, digital asset management systems, BitCurator, OpenRefine, Oxygen, MarcEdit and other special collections tools.

  • Participate in iterative development of accessioning and processing policies, procedures, workflows, and best practices.

  • Co‑manage the local instance of ArchivesSpace.

  • Direct and coordinate student employee work.

  • Support curators and acquisitions staff in field collection appraisal and packing as needed.

  • Collaborate with the Digital Collections Unit on metadata creation for digital materials.

  • Apply project‑management strategies to accessioning and processing work.

  • Contribute to gathering metrics, tracking progress, and reporting to align with library operational and strategic goals.

  • Serve regular shifts on Reading Room desks and assist with access to unprocessed collections.

  • Move, shelve, and organize archival boxes and record cartons.

  • Serve on department, library, university committees, task forces or working groups, contributing to the library’s reputation and maintaining updated professional knowledge of current trends.


Physical Requirements



  • Lift and move archival boxes and materials up to 35 pounds.

  • Push and maneuver fully loaded book trucks.

  • Use ladders or step stools to reach materials on shelves.


Qualifications


Basic qualifications: Advanced degree.


Additional qualifications: Two or more years of work experience in accessioning and/or processing archival materials.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited institution or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of archival accessioning and processing standards across multiple formats.

  • Experience with varying levels of processing and extensible approaches to create access.

  • Track record of balancing high‑volume processing with oversight of multiple concurrent projects.

  • Experience managing competing priorities within a technical services environment.

  • Experience delegating tasks and managing student labor.

  • Project‑management experience managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with flexibility for change and reprioritization.

  • Experience interacting with diverse staff and public, promoting excellent service.

  • Experience or familiarity with collection development and archival appraisal.

  • Experience with archival collection management systems (e.g., ArchivesSpace).

  • Commitment to learning new technologies, including AI tools for archival work.

  • Knowledge of acquiring, preserving, and providing access to born‑digital collections.

  • Proficiency with XML editors, Text Editors, and MarcEdit.

  • Commitment to the library’s values.
