NCDOT Transportation Construction Inspector (Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4) (Full-Time)
Job Locations: US-NC-Asheville | US-NC-Hendersonville
Type: Full-Time, Variable Hours, (min. 30 hrs/wk)
Experience Qualifications
Do you have roadway and structure inspection experience, strong documentation skills, and the drive to support NCDOT projects while earning and maintaining industry certifications?
MBP is looking for a NCDOT Transportation Inspector (Levels 1-4) to support transportation construction projects. Candidates will align to level based on experience, with progressive responsibility from entry-level inspection through lead project inspection and guidance of junior technicians.
Responsibilities
On-site inspection and quality assurance of roadway and structure construction for conformance with plans, contracts, specifications, and applicable codes
Provide guidance and recommendations to the project team; coordinate with agency and contractor personnel; act as a key point of contact for field observations and documentation
Oversee project documentation workflows and contribute to monthly reporting and estimates
Utilize client electronic project management systems to track and log materials and test results
Support training and development of junior inspectors and assist with scheduling coordination as needed
Exercise independent judgment within delegated authority and escalate issues appropriately
Assist in oversight of inspection activities and related duties as delegated
Verify highway work zones and traffic control setups align with current standards
Record, monitor, and report materials received, used, and tested; prepare monthly project estimates and associated sketches
Prepare and maintain project records including daily diaries with locations of work, workforce, equipment, materials, photos, and inspection reports
Provide customer service and courteous communication to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and project stakeholders
Complete administrative tasks (daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, monthly mileage reports)
Obtain additional training and certifications as needed and maintain certifications required for assigned inspection duties
Participate in company activities and support coordination of inspectors’ schedules
Recommend rejection of work or payment for completed work as delegated by the Project Owner
Who We Are Looking For
Experience: Construction work experience with understanding of construction means and methods; prior inspection experience in the same or similar type of work as the assigned project
Experience may be in federal, municipal, transportation, ports, or marina projects
Level II Technician: Minimum four years of relevant experience; able to perform duties without supervision and read resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements
Level III Technician: Minimum five years of relevant experience; able to perform duties without supervision and read resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements
Level IV Technician: Minimum seven years of relevant experience; may serve as Lead Project Inspector performing general project oversight and communication with the client and the Contractor, including supervision of lower-level technicians and providing guidance as needed
Education/Knowledge
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire
Basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements
Construction-related training and/or coursework in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, project management, or materials
Materials, methods, and tools utilized in construction, repair, or renovation for monitored and inspected work
Preferred Certifications

QMS Roadway (preferred)
Conventional Density (preferred)
ABS Sampling (preferred)
Borrow Pit Sampling (preferred)
Level II Erosion and Sediment Control (preferred)
Skills and Abilities
Carry out specific inspection assignments and document work progress
Use computers and be proficient with Microsoft Office, email, internet navigation, and web-based tools
Learn client and MBP construction management information systems within one month of hire
Read and interpret plans and contract specifications for assigned work
Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments
Communicate inspection issues effectively and responsibly, verbally and in writing
Use surveying and measurement tools effectively
Obtain and maintain industry certifications specific to assigned duties
Physical requirements: bend, stoop, kneel, twist, grasp, reach, stand, sit, climb; work in confined spaces and at heights; occasional tasks up to 12 hours
Work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions; navigate construction sites with uneven terrain
Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record; travel regularly
Work independently with minimal supervision
Guidance/Responsibility
Assignments are generally received from Engineers/Consultants and Project personnel
Work is supervised with opportunities to work independently
Level of supervision is expected to decrease progressively with experience
