Summary
The Dayton VA Medical Center is seeking a Nursing Assistant to join our Community Living Center - Patton's Place. In this role you will provide Veteran/resident care, perform clinical and technical procedures, and ancillary services.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship:

Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Experience or Education or Training:

Six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform the work of a NA, or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation, or completion of an intensive‑specialized occupation‑related training course of study or program of less than one year, as a NA may also meet in full the experience requirements.

English Language Proficiency:

NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.

Grandfathering Provisions:

All NAs employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

Grade Determinations:

In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates (GS‑3, GS‑4, GS‑5). (Summary of qualification levels omitted for brevity.)

Physical Requirements:

Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, manual dexterity; potentially long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing; transferring patients and objects; exposure to infectious patients and contamination; exposure to combative patients; ability to handle stressful situations and shift priorities.

Duties

Listen attentively to reports and note pertinent items.

Accept adults’ chosen lifestyles and assist in necessary adjustments relating to health.

Recognize adults’ values, independence, and ability to be self‑sustaining in life.

Assist patients to remain physically and socially active and maintain peer group interactions.

Assist patients in coping with loss (e.g., hearing, eyesight, and death of significant others).

Assist patients with self‑care as required and with maintaining as much independence as possible.

Perform basic procedures and treatments according to the orientation/annual/unit specific competency checklist.

Recognize medical/behavioral emergencies and obtain immediate assistance.

Complete basic life support and PMDB (as appropriate) training within the orientation period.

Assist patients to keep physically and socially active.

Attend interdisciplinary rounds and discharge planning meetings; develop an awareness of team member roles and educational tools.

Implement patient instruction/discharge planning interventions for assigned patients as designated by Team Leader/Charge Nurse.

Provide respectful care that maintains individuality, dignity, and self‑esteem for Veterans.

Function as a therapeutic companion (TC) for Veterans who need close observation, including bathing, personal hygiene, feeding, elimination, intake and output, and preventing self‑harm or interference with treatment.

Keep Veterans under direct observation and engage them in activities as indicated.

Accurately document nursing care, interventions, and patient response on established templates.

Follow basic admission routine for admitting designated Veterans.

Provide accurate information for special incidents involving Veterans and staff members to Team Leader/Charge Nurse shortly after the incident occurs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

Work schedule: 11:30 pm – 8:00 am (23:30 – 08:00) – including weekends and holiday rotations.

Recruitment incentive (Sign‑on Bonus): Not authorized.

Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not authorized.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases; higher step rate may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications.

Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time off per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment – up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster care placement.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment – full‑time employees with a total family income below $144 000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs (maximum $416.66 per month).

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care; many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement.
