Job Description
Lead Building Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems while leading day‑to‑day engineering activities on site. This role serves as the technical lead, ensuring buildings operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable codes and standards. The Lead Building Engineer provides guidance to engineering staff, coordinates vendors, and partners with property management and clients to deliver reliable facilities operations.
Pay
$35.00 - $45.00/hour. The pay listed is the hourly range or the hourly rate for this position. A specific offer will vary based on the applicant’s experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and alignment with market data.

Responsibilities
Lead and perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, building automation systems (BAS) and general building infrastructure.
Serve as the primary technical resource for on‑site engineering staff.
Monitor system performance and troubleshoot complex issues to minimize downtime.
Assign daily tasks and oversee work activities of building engineers and technicians.
Coach, mentor, and train staff on safe work practices, procedures, and technical skills.
Support staffing coverage including scheduling, holidays, and emergency response.
Coordinate and oversee third‑party vendors and contractors.
Assist with small projects, system upgrades, and capital improvements.
Review vendor work for quality, safety, and contract compliance.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local codes, and company policies.
Maintain accurate documentation including work orders, logs, inspections, and reports.
Promote a strong safety culture and participate in safety meetings and audits.
Communicate effectively with property management, clients, and occupants.
Provide timely updates on building conditions, repairs, and preventive maintenance.
Respond to after‑hours emergencies as required.
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
5+ years of commercial building engineering or facilities maintenance experience.
Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
Demonstrated leadership or lead‑level experience.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
Preferred:
Trade school or technical certification.
EPA Universal Certification.
Journeyman or applicable state/local license.
Experience with CMMS and BAS systems.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Stand, walk, climb ladders, and work in mechanical spaces.
Ability to respond to emergency calls outside of normal business hours.
Work Environment
Commercial office, healthcare, industrial, or mixed‑use facilities.
May require exposure to mechanical rooms, rooftops, and varying temperatures.
