Job Title
Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating and maintaining sanitation equipment, collecting refuse and/or yard waste along assigned route, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor.

Essential Functions
Drives sanitation vehicles, namely refuse truck or automated side loader; performs and supervises carting of refuse and or yard waste carts or cans; unloads cans into truck.
Operates equipment required for loading, compressing, and dumping; replaces cans and lids.
Responsible for completing all routes.
Adheres to all safety practices and policies
Reports violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.
Cleans and maintains refuse truck and equipment.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in sanitation operations, or motorized heavy equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; comprehensive knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a rapid pace; ability to operate automotive equipment safely and effectively; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to supervise the work of unskilled helpers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Physical Requirements: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Valid NC commercial driver's license with Class A or B endorsement.
