Utility Worker (Softgel)
The Utility Worker (Softgel) is responsible for performing a variety of manual duties in the pick up and transportation of product, assisting machine operators, polishing and packaging product, cleaning equipment and facilities, and maintaining simple, routine records.
Responsibilities:
Stages required materials to feed multiple encapsulation machines and maintain uninterrupted production in accordance with priorities of the production schedule.
Identifies multiple materials and using pallet jacks transports them to the work area to be staged.
Removes empty containers and vessels to be washed or recycled as required.
Uses hand tools such wrenches, screw drivers, nut-drivers, cutters and pliers to prepare flow-lines of various sizes.
Prepares connections, claps, tubing and required tools to efficiently exchange and connect various types of vessels and containers to encapsulation machines.
Identifies the correct materials and scans them to charge them to appropriate in-process work orders.
Records each utilized material in the appropriate batch record in accordance with cGMP's.
Cleans and prepares equipment, mixes medicines that tend to settle to ensure proper flow when they are installed on the encapsulation machines.
Monitors temperatures of over twenty vessels and reports discrepancies to supervisors.
Cleans and maintains the work area in an orderly fashion.
Multitasks on various activities to maintain uninterrupted production of capsules on multiple lines.
Uses fork lift, pallet jack and drum dollies to locate, pick up and transport raw materials, in-process or finished product to and from storage or within the soft gel department.
Assists in loading product/ingredients into machines.
Assists in disassembling equipment and cleaning it in accordance with specific procedures; washes and dries utensils, pans, tanks and other containers; uses a variety of cloths, brushes and cleaning agents to clean rooms in which product is prepared or stored, ensuring they meet sanitary requirements of the Company.
Assists machine operators with changeovers from one product to another.
Maintains routine logs and records of cleaning and transportation and production activities, ensuring accuracy, completeness and compliance with procedures.
Uses scales to weigh materials and product; calculates and records results; informs supervisor when results don't balance.
Spreads soft gelatin capsules on trays ensuring they are distributed evenly and meets quality standards.
Makes cakes from old/unusable gelatin; fills stainless trays with hot gelatin; lies to cool; peels out of tray and puts in drum for sale as scrap.
Pumps medicine into receivers.
Uses small hand tools to assist with disassembling equipment, and other duties.
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly fashion in accordance with set sanitary standards; cleans holding trays and other equipment.
Scoops capsules into polishing pans and monitors polishing process; notifies supervisor when product is defective or does not meet quality standards.
Unloads capsules, as necessary, transfers capsules, fills and weighs into boxes, seals boxes, places on pallets and moves completed pallets to proper area.
Observes product, containers and packing to ensure they conform to set standards; notifies supervisor of variances.
Cross-trains in duties of other Utility staff. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: A high school diploma/GED completion or 5 years of work equivalency is required.
Certification: Fork lift certification must be obtained within one year of securing position.
Experience: No prior experience required; prefer 6 months warehousing experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Requires: Fluent English communication skills to read/understand written instructions, manuals and other information; to maintain a variety of written records, and to communicate effectively with, and train, employees in inspection procedures. Basic, accurate arithmetic skills to weigh, count, and maintain routine numerical records. Physical ability to work on feet for full eight hour shift, and perform repetitive motion activities frequently requiring lifting of up to 75 pounds.
Physical Requirements:
Stand/walk for full work shift; depending on assignment, incumbents may have limited opportunity to move about.
Perform repetitive job duties for long periods. Periodically push/pull containers weighing up to 600 pounds, and lift containers up to 75 pounds. Operate a fork lift and pallet jack in a congested area.
Environment: Constant exposure to noise levels loud enough to require employees to wear hearing protection in machine room and counting area. Warm temperature levels, fumes, vibration, dust, etc., sufficient to cause minor discomfort, oily/wet conditions. The employee wears protective eye wear, hair net, uniforms, steel-toed shoes and gloves.
Safety: The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely in accordance with standard operating procedures and good manufacturing practices without endangering the health or safety of self or others.

The salary range for this position is $41,000.00 - $68,000.00. Actual compensation will take into account a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to geographic location, education, experience, qualifications and job-related skills. It is not typical for an individual to be hired above the midpoint of the range for their role and compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case.
