Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a nonprofit in Chicago committed to alleviating loneliness and isolation among older adults in the City of Chicago, Northwest Indiana, and DuPage & Kane Counties. Our commitment to "flowers before bread" guides all activities, including one‑on‑one visits, holiday parties, summer vacation experiences, and birthday celebrations. LBFE’s volunteer program helps older adults experience companionship, life quality, and dignity.
Position: Volunteer Program Assistant (VPA) – a year‑long, structured volunteer role that supports and enriches the lives of 25‑30 elders in a specific Chicago area.
Responsibilities
- Commit to a year‑long volunteer experience.
- Build meaningful relationships with 25‑30 elders twice a month.
- Plan and provide engaging social opportunities, such as outings or holiday events.
- Provide companionship for errands and transportation when needed.
- Assess elders’ needs and forward findings to appropriate LBFE staff.
- Maintain accurate database records of interactions.
- Participate in staff and VPA meetings, program evaluations, and new VPA training.
- Oversee a personal special project outside of visiting elders.
- Assist with maintenance of LBFE vehicles.
Required Skills
- Effective communicator, attentive listener, and good conversation starter.
- Team collaborator and active participant in an organization.
- Minimum one year of consistent driving experience; ability to operate LBFE vehicle on city and highway routes.
- 21+ years of age.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.

Time Commitment
Full‑time (part‑time available): 36 hours per week, 9 AM‑5 PM, with possible weekend work. One‑year commitment.
