Position Summary
The Senior Database Administrator/Developer is a dual-role position responsible for the administration, security, development, and ongoing optimization of Microsoft SQL Server environments. This individual will own the full database lifecycle, from infrastructure hardening and performance tuning to schema design and T-SQL development.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration
• Install, configure, patch, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server instances across production, staging, and development environments.
• Monitor database health, performance, and capacity, and proactively address issues before they impact users.
• Design and implement backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies, including Always On Availability Groups.
• Manage database growth, storage, and resource allocation.
• Maintain documentation of database architecture, configurations, etc.
• Ensures acceptable database availability and response time by leading database problem diagnosis and resolution, proactive performance monitoring, and performance tuning.
• Research emerging database technologies and trends to understand future direction of database technology.
• Promote data quality and enforce data integrity
Database Security
• Harden SQL Server installations following industry best practices.
• Implement and manage authentication, authorization, and role-based access controls.
• Configure encryption at rest and in transit, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and Always Encrypted where appropriate.
• Establish auditing, monitoring, and alerting for security events.
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and organizational security requirements.
• Understanding of and commitment to protecting the integrity, security, and privacy of the critical business data.
Database Development
• Design, develop, and maintain databases, schemas, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and views.
• Write efficient, well-documented T-SQL for both transactional and reporting workloads.
• Optimize query performance through indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and code refactoring.
• Collaborate with application developers to design data models that support business requirements.
• Support ETL processes and integrations, including SSIS packages where applicable.
Leadership
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to other database staff and developers.
• Establish and enforce standards for database development, deployment, and administration.
• Participate in project planning, estimation, and roadmap discussions.
• Lead code reviews and design reviews for database-related work.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams including infrastructure, security, and application development.
Required Qualifications
• Significant professional experience as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator.
• Strong development background with T-SQL, stored procedures, and relational database design.
• Demonstrated experience securing SQL Server environments, including server hardening, access control, encryption, and auditing.
• Hands-on experience with high availability and disaster recovery technologies.
• Proven expertise in performance tuning, indexing, and query optimization.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with cloud database platforms such as Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or AWS RDS.
• Familiarity with SSIS, SSRS, or SSAS.
• Scripting experience with PowerShell.
• Experience with source control and CI/CD for database changes (e.g., Git, Azure DevOps, Redgate, Flyway).
