Job Description
Shall organize and administrate the overall program of athletics. Shall recommend with the advice of the Superintendent and the professional personnel required to implement the program. Shall supervise the program of athletics and see that all guidelines of the University Interscholastic League are followed.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree required.
A valid Texas teaching certificate required.
Minimum of three years’ experience as a successful varsity coach or athletic director required.
Knowledge of the overall operations of a district-wide athletic program with the ability to manage budget and personnel, knowledge of state and UIL policies governing athletics, and strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Management
Direct school services to provide for all students equitably.
Ensure that student progress is evaluated on a regular, systematic basis, and the findings are used to make the athletic program more effective.
Provide appropriate time, resources, and materials to support accomplishment of educational goals.
School/Organizational Climate
Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
Handle sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Employ effective interpersonal skills.
School/Organizational Improvement
Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
Contribute to the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvement.
Design feasible projects for implementing innovations.
Obtain and use evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to examine effectiveness of the athletic program.
Ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
Personnel Management
Develop training options and/or improvement plans to ensure the best operation in the area of athletics.
Plan, implement, and support district programs to include middle school for recruitment, selection, and orientation.
Evaluate job performance of coaches to ensure effectiveness.
Make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
Direct and manage the athletic program and facilities.
Ensure that programs are cost effective, and funds are managed prudently.
Compile budgets and cost estimates based upon documented program needs.
Implement the policies established by federal law, state law, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and the local board policy in the area of athletics.
Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents required.
Establish the physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport and verify each athlete’s eligibility.
Student Management
Demonstrate support for the district’s student management policies and expected student behavior related to the athletic program.
Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning vital issues.
Set quality standards for academic and athletic success.
Professional Growth and Development
Take the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignments.
Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible and serve as a role model for all district staff.
School/Community Relations
Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area athletics to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
Demonstrate awareness of district/community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
Working Conditions
Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as needed; moderate lifting and carrying. Attend out of town meetings and trips. Work inside and outside during all type of weather.
