is expanding its Trauma & Surgical Critical Care service line and is seeking a full‑time BC/BE Trauma & Surgical Critical Care Surgeon to help build a new Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, a Level II Trauma Center.

Job Summary
The surgeon will play a foundational role in the creation, development, and leadership of a new SICU, serving as the primary intensivist for trauma and surgical patients. Responsibilities include leading Surgical Critical Care and Trauma/Emergency General Surgery services, managing patient flow, establishing ICU workflows, and developing evidence‑based protocols (sepsis, rib fractures, VTE prevention, ventilator management, massive transfusion). Participation in SICU governance, quality initiatives, and multidisciplinary improvements is expected.

Key Responsibilities

Lead daily rounds and manage patient flow in the SICU.

Perform emergency general surgery procedures and provide comprehensive trauma care from resuscitation through postoperative management.

Respond to trauma activations (15‑minute response for Level I activations).

Collaborate with trauma APPs, overnight APPs, and medical‑surgical teams.

Participate in outpatient clinic visits for trauma and ACS follow‑up as needed.

Required Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. degree

Board‑certified or eligible in General Surgery

Board‑certified or eligible in Surgical Critical Care

Eligible for unrestricted Indiana medical licensure

Strong clinical skills in trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care

Commitment to multidisciplinary team‑based care

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with ICU, trauma, or ACS program development

Experience working in APP‑supported models of care

Academic or teaching experience

Participation in PI/QI or ACS verification initiatives

Work Schedule

Shared daytime primary trauma call (average 6–7 shifts per month), with additional backup shifts.

Nighttime trauma and acute care surgery call with dedicated overnight APP support (≈5–6 calls per month).

Balanced clinical schedule including SICU coverage, scheduled OR time, ACS/trauma blocks, and outpatient clinic.

Participation in Trauma Committee and Peer Review meetings (~50% time).

Leadership & Program Development Opportunities

Contribute to building SICU staffing models, rounding structures, and clinical workflows.

Assist in optimizing APP integration across trauma, ACS, and SICU services.

Participate in trauma program development, ACS verification support, and performance improvement.

Address issues related to clinical practices and collaborate on policies, protocols, and multidisciplinary initiatives.

Opportunities for academic appointment and research collaboration.

Mentorship Opportunities

Teach and mentor residents, medical students, APPs, and AGACNP learners.

Engage in educational activities through the Indiana University School of Medicine – South Bend campus.

Support professional development of SICU and trauma APPs.

Participate in research collaboration with the University of Notre Dame.

Contribute to QI projects, publications, and national conference presentations.

The Trauma, ACS, and SICU services are supported by an experienced team of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including dedicated daytime SICU APPs, trauma service APPs, and a nighttime APP supporting trauma, acute care surgery, and potential SICU cross‑coverage.
