Manager 3, Software Engineering (Traffic and Routing Platform)
Intuit Inc., San Diego, CA, United States
Come join the Platform and Development Organization (PDX) at Intuit as a Group Development Manager — a manager of managers leading one of the most consequential platform capabilities in the company.
The Traffic and Routing Platform is the connective tissue of Intuit's engineering ecosystem and is rapidly evolving into an AI-native infrastructure layer. It powers API Gateway, Service Mesh, AI Gateway, and the Agentic Communication Platform — the infrastructure through which every request to TurboTax, QuickBooks, Mailchimp, and dozens of Intuit platforms flows. This is a Tier-0 platform where reliability, developer experience, and AI readiness are non-negotiable.
We are not just modernizing infrastructure — we are building the traffic layer for the agentic AI era: MCP Gateway, LLM-aware routing, streaming protocol support, AI-powered self-service operation and more. The leader in this role will help shape that future.
Responsibilities
Strategic Platform Leadership
Drive the multi-year roadmap spanning API Gateway, Service Mesh, AI Gateway, Agentic Communication Platform, MCP Gateway, and Unified Traffic Runtime
Drive architectural evolution from traditional request-response infrastructure to an AI-native traffic platform — supporting LLM workloads, agent-to-agent communication, real-time streaming, and model-aware routing
Translate business priorities into engineering investments with measurable outcomes: availability, developer NPS, incident reduction, and cost efficiency
AI-Native Platform Engineering
Lead the buildout of AI Gateway capabilities: payload-based throttling, token-aware rate limiting, semantic caching, prompt moderation, and latency-aware routing for GenAI workloads
Drive the Agentic Communication Platform: production-grade streaming (SSE, WebSocket, multimodal), east-west agent traffic via Service Mesh, and failover/resiliency for long-lived AI connections
Own MCP Gateway — Intuit's emerging gateway for Model Context Protocol traffic, enabling secure, authenticated, and observable tool-use patterns for AI agents
Champion AI-driven platform operations: Traffic Agent convergence (unifying configuration, troubleshooting, and admin intelligence into a single AI assistant), intelligent incident triage, and AI-powered self-service for developers
Partner with GenOS, Identity, and BU engineering teams to define and evolve the traffic architecture for Intuit's AI product surface
People Leadership
Lead and develop a team of managers and senior/staff engineers; build a culture of accountability, psychological safety, and continuous growth
Attract, retain, and grow world‑class engineering talent in a rapidly evolving AI infrastructure space
Foster high-performance collaboration across global engineering teams spanning multiple time zones
Engineering & Operational Excellence
Drive a zero-incident mindset — own reliability targets for Tier‑0 traffic infrastructure powering millions of customers
Champion platform resiliency: load shedding (ingress/egress), circuit breaking, adaptive throttling, and progressive rollout at scale
Establish engineering excellence practices: chaos engineering, SLO/SLA governance, canary deployments, and automated incident recovery
Developer Experience
Champion the developer-facing experience: self-service workflows, documentation, onboarding, and AI-powered observability tooling in DevPortal
Reduce time-to-productivity for service teams onboarding to API Gateway, Service Mesh, and AI Gateway
Build developer feedback loops into the platform lifecycle — driving continuous improvement in developer NPS
Cross-Functional Partnership
Partner with Product Management, Architects, Security, and BU engineering leads on roadmap prioritization and platform design reviews
Serve as a senior engineering voice in Intuit's Platform Architecture forums and AI infrastructure strategy conversations
Manage stakeholder expectations across Business Units with diverse traffic, reliability, and AI integration needs
Qualifications
Leadership & Management
8+ years of people management experience, including managing managers (manager of managers)
Proven track record of building, scaling, and retaining high-performance platform engineering teams
Strong executive communication — comfortable presenting strategy and results to VP/SVP level
Technical Depth — Traffic & Networking
12+ years of software engineering and platform engineering experience
Deep expertise in cloud-native technologies: Kubernetes (EKS), Istio, Envoy, Prometheus
Mastery of Layer 4/7 networking: rate limiting, circuit breaking, mTLS, load balancing, traffic shaping
Hands‑on experience with API Gateway and Service Mesh platforms at meaningful scale
Technical Depth — AI Infrastructure
Experience designing or operating AI Gateway / LLM traffic infrastructure — token-based throttling, streaming protocols, model routing, or equivalent
Familiarity with agentic communication patterns: MCP (Model Context Protocol), SSE, WebSocket, long-lived connections, and agent-to-agent traffic
Understanding of GenAI system architecture: orchestration layers, LLM backends, prompt/response pipelines, and observability for AI workloads
Experience applying AI to platform operations: intelligent configuration, automated incident response, self-service tooling, or AI-assisted developer workflows
Software & Systems
Experience building large-scale distributed systems in Go, Java, or Python
Working knowledge of observability stacks: Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or equivalent
Familiarity with progressive delivery patterns: canary, feature flags, blue/green, and traffic splitting at scale
Mindset & Culture
AI-first thinking — you ask 'how can AI accelerate this?' before defaulting to manual solutions
Extreme ownership — you hold yourself accountable for platform outcomes, not just team outputs
Strong developer empathy — you build platforms for developers, not at them
Data-driven — you set targets, measure outcomes, and adjust course based on evidence
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)
